Let’s take a closer look at the key games coming up in the Round of 32.
No. 5 VCU vs. No. 4 Michigan, CBS, 12:15 p.m. ET
The crown jewel of Saturday’s games starts at the top, as Michigan attempts to continue the Big Ten’s stellar play in this tournament.
The Wolverines looked like their top-five selves from February, hitting a barrage of three-pointers for a double-digit win over South Dakota State.
Trey Burke didn’t have his best game, though, and he’ll need to play better facing “Havoc” in their next matchup.
VCU’s defense is a point guard’s nightmare, as the Rams will try to take the ball out of Burke’s hands early and hope his teammates show their inexperience.
It’s a clash of styles you won’t want to miss.
No. 14 Harvard Crimson vs. No. 6 Arizona, TNT, 6:10 p.m. ET
For sheer Cinderella potential, this game has the “must watch” label written all over it.
Harvard will need to shoot a high percentage to hang around in this one, and Wesley Saunders will have to pace them as their top talent.
The hero of the New Mexico win, Laurent Rivard, will get a few open looks, but he’ll have to hit some with Wildcat defenders in his face as well.
On the other end, Arizona is poised to win in a runaway. At one point Sean Miller’s squad was ranked No. 2 in the country, and they have the players to play like it. Mark Lyons and Solomon Jones should overwhelm the Crimson with their inside-out playmaking and overall athleticism.
No. 6 Butler Bulldogs vs. No. 3 Marquette Wildcats, CBS, 7:45 p.m. ET
Butler has their sights set on a deep tournament run, and Brad Steven’s has a cast of talent that could do just that.
The Bulldogs possess a physical big man in Andrew Smith and a sharpshooter with range in Rotnei Clarke. Those two may not be Matt Howard and Gordon Hayward, but they aren’t far off.
Roosevelt Jones, though, may hold the key to his team’s success as he’ll be tasked with keeping up with Vander Blue in the final five minutes.
Both teams like to play tough and physical, so this matchup isn’t one for the finesse player. If the Wildcats shoot a better percentage than their paltry 35 percent display on Thursday, they’ll hang around and turn this game into a barnburner.
