Will Trey Burke Be Able to Withstand “Havoc”?
If you were able to catch even a few minutes of the VCU-Akron game, you witnessed coach Shaka Smart’s smothering defense break open the game.
The Rams’ defense pressures all 120 feet, making the trek upcourt similar to an uphill climb. With Rams forward Juvonte Reddic having his way inside and guard Troy Daniels raining threes, VCU was able to set up their press and sustain a frenetic pace throughout.
However, Akron was without their starting point guard. Michigan, the Rams’ next opponent, sports the potential Wooden Award winner in Burke.
Not to mention Michigan has a ton of shot-makers that can hit from downtown if they break the press, most notably Tim Hardaway Jr., Nick Stauskas and Glenn Robinson III.
But ultimately Michigan’s fate will come down to Burke. If he can manage the offense past half court well enough, the game momentum will tilt in Michigan’s favor.
Will Any Double-Digit Seed Reach the Sweet 16?
There are a few intriguing candidates of the double-digit variety, but they all face tough matchups to reach the Round of 16.
California performed better than advertised in San Jose, channeling the “home” crowd to a close victory over UNLV. They’ll need some fortunate three-point shooting to get past the Orange, which is hit or miss for this Bears squad, as only Allen Crabbe has shot over 100 three-pointers on the year.
The Oregon Ducks looked like a No. 5 seed, not a No.12, in their first-round upset. As their reward, they'll go from inexperienced Oklahoma State to senior-laden St. Louis. Even so, the Ducks have the bodies inside to match the Billiken’s physical play.
Then there’s the Harvard Crimson, attempting to stretch their magical run into the second weekend against Arizona.
While the Wildcats are significantly more talented, they’ve had lapses of play the past few months. If the Crimson can get hot again, stranger things have happened.
Will Butler Begin Another Magical Run?
The Bulldogs started this NCAA tournament from an unfamiliar position: the favorite. Bucknell made a run to take the lead in the second half, but Brad Steven’s team was best in the final five minutes. Did you expect anything less?
They’ll go up against Marquette in the Round of 32, a team riding some magic of their own.
Between Roosevelt Jones, Rotnei Clarke and Andrew Smith though, the Bulldogs have the horses to match up with the Wildcats athletically. When this game is over, we may see a familiar team emerge from Butler.
