The Anquan Boldin Effect: Five Teams Boldin Could Be Great With in 2009

Magnus JohnsonApr 16, 2009

Anquan Boldin had a great season last year, his third as a Pro Bowler.

He did an incredible job of complementing the likes of Larry Fitzgerald in the Arizona Cardinals' receiving corps, adding another all-star target for Kurt Warner.

However, after the Super Bowl, Arizona and Boldin had many disagreements, and the Cardinals were forced to start looking for a trade.

Now, everyone is looking all around the league for Boldin's perfect fit. Here's my list of five teams Boldin could be an incredible asset to in '09.

Minnesota Vikings

In Minnesota, the quarterback problem has been dramatic to say the least.

Tarvaris Jackson has been superb at times, but shaky at others. After losing Gus Frerotte, the Vikings picked up Sage Rosenfels to compete with Jackson for the starting job.

But what the Vikings should really be focusing on is their receiving corps. Bernard Berrian is the only real star WR that can make great catches and lead this team.

This means Boldin would be a great fit for the Vikings, giving the starting QB, whoever it may be, another target to fall back on.

This move would also be a great idea for Minnesota. It would fix their wide receiver needs and open up a draft pick so they could work on their offensive line and help protect the quarterback.

Anquan Boldin could step up in many ways for Minnesota and be a great fit in the NFC North.

Minnesota's receiving corps would be incredible with Boldin, Berrian, Bobby Wade, and Sidney Rice at WR and Visanthe Shiancoe at TE.  The Vikes could be the front runners for the NFC North with him.

Miami Dolphins

This is one of the main places people have been looking for Anquan to go. With Ted Ginn Jr. leading the receiving corps for the Phins, Boldin has let the press know he would love to go to Miami and be the No. 1 receiver. This leaves no reason for the Dolphins not to try to get him.

Boldin, looking snappy in a Phins jersey, would carry his incredible numbers from last season to this one and provide a great receiver for Chad Pennington and Co.

The acquisition of Boldin would silence NFL fans who say the Dolphins will have a terrible season next year and raise questions as to whether the Phins could surpass the Pats for the AFC East title.

There could be a bright future ahead for Miami, and the acquisition of Boldin would have a lot to do with that.

New Orleans Saints

The Saints have a strong defense and running game, but in order to have a really good passing game, they need a great receiver to complement Drew Brees' throwing.

Marques Colston is only okay, and Robert Meachem is nothing close to what they need.

To really complete this team, the Saints need to take a gamble and trade for Boldin. A great passing game would complete this rising team and most likely bring New Orleans back to the playoffs in ‘09.

A young team with a lot of potential, the Saints could really use another Pro Bowler on their roster. Boldin could take away negative talk from NFL fans and start up more positive discussions.

With him in the lineup, New Orleans could be right up there with Carolina and Atlanta, competing for the NFC South and making it one of the toughest divisions in the league.

New York Giants

New York suffered two pretty bad losses this offseason, losing their two best WRs in Amani Toomer and Plaxico Burress. These moves have left second year WR Steve Smith (the other one) the best receiver on the team.

They have done something about it recently, reportedly securing a trade with the Cleveland Browns for Braylon Edwards, but if New York really wants to get back into Super Bowl contention, Boldin is their guy.

Two star receivers are something the Giants haven't had in a while—and something they need in order to be the best team in the league.

Boldin knows how to make himself known by a team and a QB, and he would do just that with the Giants.

If he went to New York, he could be on his second Super Bowl team in the last two years, a great achievement.

The only stumbling block might be Boldin's need to be the best player on the team—but that could easily be overcome by his desire to get a Super Bowl ring on his finger.

Green Bay Packers

Boldin wants to be the No. 1 receiver on his team, and he would be just that in Green Bay.

Donald Driver, the best WR on the team right now, would easily slide into the No. 2 receiver spot. This would allow Boldin to have great receivers, like Driver and Greg Jennings, to back him up.

With an inexperienced QB in Aaron Rodgers behind center, the Packers need to do something about getting him receiving help right now if they want to succeed.

With a receiver like Boldin on the team, the Pack could climb back into contention for the NFC North.

Their biggest star since Brett Favre, Boldin would bring news cameras back to Wisconsin and intimidate opposing teams as well. The Packers would be a great fit for Boldin, and I think he'd be happy there.

So there you have it—the five teams I think Boldin would be great on.

The question is, which one will he choose and be chosen by: Minnesota, New Orleans, Miami, New York, or Green Bay?

No one knows for sure right now. If I had to choose, I would, without a doubt, say New Orleans would be the best fit for Boldin—and let me tell you, I think the fans would be pretty excited about it too.
