2008-2009 Washington Wizards Season Review
In his press conference, Arenas after signing his $111 million dollar contract stated to owner Abe Pollin that the team would win a championship for him and would have a banner up there for him by the beginning of the 2009-2010 season.
However, when Arenas had a procedure done to clear out some debris in his left knee in mid-September, the same knee he had two surgeries on previously before the team was unsure of Arenas and themselves.
Without Roger Mason, a key component that helped Washington win 43 games last season the team knew they were going be a least mediocre and would have to try to whether the storm until Arenas returned.
When starting center Brendan Haywood went down in training camp with torn ligaments in his right wrist, and had to miss five months of the NBA season things look like they were headed in a bad direction.
When Washington started off 1-10, Caron Butler and Antawn Jamison were both playing inconsistent basketball. As for the team they were just finding ways to lose and it was just unacceptable.
And as a result, Grunfeld pointed to coach Eddie Jordan as the scapegoat, and Jordan was fired after 5 seasons with the team. Eddie Tapscott Director of player development was named interim head coach.
When the team continued to struggle and lose games, Grunfeld pulled a trade to acquire Mike James and Jarvis Crittenton. James helped the Wizards with his scoring and leadership, But he has been criticized for shooting the ball 99.9% he is on the court. Crittenton started off slow,But he has Meliorated his game and was granted more minutes by Tapscott.
With Tapscott inexperience at head coach, he failed to play the players that actually produced for the team including: Javale McGee and Nick Young. Instead He relied on players like: Dominic McGuire, Darius Songalia, Andray Blatche to produce for the team.
At Verizon Center, the fans were frustrated with the team and the fans would boo the team off the court times and times again and it got kind of melancholy.
After missing 73 games, Arenas returned to the court and he brought excitement to the team and the fans were ecstatic.
The Wizards finished 19-63, and the team was happy that they can just end this disaster season and start fresh next season.
Former Detroit Pistons coach Flip Saunders, is expected to take over the team next season and he will have a good group to work with if the team is healthy.
The Wizards will be in the lottery, and if they are granted the number 1 pick Blake Griffin may be the savor for the franchise.
We will see what happens.
