Oregon Football: Complete Pro Day Results and Analysis
Oregon football's 2013 pro day results are now in the books, and NFL-hopeful Ducks will wait for the draft April 25-27 to learn their fate.
Oregon pro day was an especially good opportunity for the Ducks not invited to last month's NFL combine to show the pro scouts what they could do. However, all five of the former Ducks who did participate at the combine—Kiko Alonso, Kenjon Barner, John Boyett, Dion Jordan and Kyle Long—were also in attendance today at Moshofsky Center.
The Mo Center was packed with NFL team representatives, 27 in all, to witness the Ducks' workout.
Here come the official results and analysis on the Oregon participants.
All player and coach interview comments are from ESPN's streaming coverage of Oregon's pro day. Click on this link: http://espn.go.com/watchespn/index/_/id/859535/2013-oregon-pro-day to watch the replay.
Ryan Clanton
1 of 16PRO DAY RESULTS:
Height: NA
Weight: NA
40 Time: NA
Bench Press: 42 reps
Results courtesy Rob Moseley of The Register-Guard
Former offensive lineman Ryan Clanton was not invited to the NFL combine, and by the looks of his performance today, he was a little ticked off at the oversight.
By almost any standard, Clanton had a terrific performance at Oregon's pro day. His unbelievable 42 reps in the bench press—cheered on heartwarmingly by his former teammates—would have been first at the combine, and by a long shot. Here's Rob Moseley of the Register-Guard's take on Clanton's bench press:
"Most bench press reps by anybody at the combine this year: 38. Most by an offensive lineman: 36. @ryanclanton today: 42.
— Rob Moseley (@DuckFootball) March 14, 2013"
Eric Herman, offensive lineman from Ohio, finished first among OL at the combine with 36 reps. Closer to home, USC's Khaled Holmes had 13 reps. So, yeah, Clanton's 42 reps were something special.
Clanton also ran a good 40 (official results not available yet), and, according to ESPN, his time would have put him in the upper ranks for offensive linemen at the combine.
Did Clanton help himself today? Oh yeah, big time.
Isaac Remington
2 of 16PRO DAY RESULTS:
Height: 6'5"
Weight: 298 pounds
40 Time: 5.41
Bench Press: 20 reps
Vertical Jump: 28.5
Broad Jump: 9'3"
Results courtesy of 247Sports.com
Former Oregon defensive tackle Isaac Remington, his hair in a tidy ponytail, participated in drills today. His overall performance was average, and his 40 time was painfully slow.
Jackson Rice
3 of 16PRO DAY RESULTS:
Height: 6'3"
Weight: 219 pounds
40 Time: 5.06
Vertical Jump: 30
Broad Jump: 9'4"
20 Shuttle: 4.62
Results courtesy of 247Sports.com
The most bored man on the Ducks' roster in 2012, punter Jackson Rice, was probably the guy most happy to run some drills in front of the pros.
But doesn't only one thing matter with punters? Information was not available on whether Rice actually kicked for the scouts.
Kenjon Barner
4 of 16PRO DAY RESULTS:
Height: 5'9"
Weight: 193 pounds
40 Time: 4.43 electronic; 4.38 hand timed (ran 4.52 at the combine)
Bench Press: 20 reps
Vertical Jump: 35.5
Broad Jump: 10'2"
Results courtesy WalterFootball.com
Former Oregon running back Kenjon Barner is hoping to join his pal LaMichael James in the NFL next season. James was present at Oregon pro day to support his best friend and other former teammates. James probably got some good-natured ribbing from former teammate Ed Dickson, also in the Moshofsky Center, whose Baltimore Ravens beat James' San Francisco 49ers in this year's Super Bowl.
Barner, who wasn't happy with his 40-yard dash time at the combine, came out today determined to improve in that event. And he did. Barner was hand-timed at 4.38, which would have put him in first place at the combine. He looked spectacularly fast.
In addition to his excellent physical performances, Barner performed well in an on-camera interview with ESPN's Jill Savage and Kelly Stouffer. Barner is thoughtful, articulate and natural in his interviews. Teams who value character and intelligence as well as speed and talent will have Barner on their lists.
Michael Clay
5 of 16PRO DAY RESULTS:
Height: 5'11"
Weight: 230 pounds
40 Time: 4.76
Bench Press: 23 reps
Vertical Jump: 31.5
Broad Jump: 9'6"
Results courtesy WalterFootball.com
Honestly, Duck fans, it's going to be difficult to replace the linebackers from the 2012 team, starting with Fiesta Bowl Defensive Player of the Game Michael Clay.
Clay, who was somewhat surprisingly not invited to the NFL combine—primarily because he is considered undersized at the linebacker position—made an impression on the NFL reps today, proving that size isn't everything. Clay definitely took advantage of this opportunity and likely proved he belongs in this discussion.
In an interview following his workout, Clay told ESPN that he "thought he did well and impressed some people." Physically, Clay looked much bigger and stronger, and said that he weighed in at 230 pounds—more muscle than in his collegiate playing days. And his time in the 40 showed that the added muscle has not slowed him down.
Interestingly, Clay also participated in some long-snapping drills. He's played that position previously—even with the Ducks as a freshman—and it gives him some extra versatility at the next level.
Based on today's performance, if Clay does not get drafted, it's likely he will at the very least get a free agent opportunity.
Kiko Alonso
6 of 16PRO DAY RESULTS:
Height: 6'3"
Weight: 235 pounds
40 Time: 4.74
Bench Press: DNP (wrist injury still nagging him)
Vertical Jump: 30.5
Broad Jump: 9'9"
Results courtesy WalterFootball.com
Michael Clay's fellow linebacker Kiko Alonso, while invited to the combine, didn't do drills there because of his lingering wrist injury suffered mid-season.
Alonso helped himself today. He looked sharp, sleek and fast. The more you watch Alonso, the more inclined you are to believe that he just might be the steal of the draft, especially if he goes later than the third round. Yes, there could be remaining character issues with Alonso, but the guy was absolutely built to play linebacker in the NFL.
Nick Cody
7 of 16PRO DAY RESULTS: NA
Don't you imagine that Kenjon Barner wishes he could take former offensive lineman Nick Cody with him to the NFL?
Cody looked good on the ESPN streaming coverage, but as of publication time, no results were available for him. Updated results will be posted as they become available.
Rob Beard
8 of 16PRO DAY RESULTS: NA
Placekicker Rob Beard's senior season was a complete mystery to most Duck fans. It's still unknown whether Beard was injured or just No. 2 to Alejandro Maldonado in placekicking duties.
While results for Beard's pro day are not yet available, I can confirm that he was in attendance. ESPN showed him running on its streaming coverage, and he looked pretty good. No official word yet on whether he kicked for the scouts or not.
Updates, if they become available, will be posted here.
Rahsaan Vaughn
9 of 16PRO DAY RESULTS:
Height: 6'1"
Weight: 190 pounds
40 Time: 4.49
Vertical Jump: 31
Broad Jump: 10'3"
20 Shuttle: 4.31
60 shuttle: 11.67
Results courtesy 247Sports.com
Wide receiver Rahsaan Vaughn didn't have much of a chance to flourish in Oregon's run-first offense. But the 6'1", 190-pound receiver has good NFL size at the position and may get a look.
Vaughn looked good today and clearly had the best outfit—kind of a camo look. He looked long and strong, and he looked faster than everyone even when he was standing still.
Vaughn was one of the uninvited-to-the-combine guys who helped raise his profile today.
Dion Jordan
10 of 16PRO DAY RESULTS: DNP
By now you know that defensive end Dion Jordan had the NFL combine experience of which dreams are made. He was a top performer in virtually half of the drills for his position.
Jordan did not participate in Oregon's pro day, as he is recovering from the shoulder surgery he put off until after the combine. His shoulder in a sling, Jordan was "just here to talk," according to Oregon head coach Mark Helfrich.
In an interview with ESPN, Jordan said that his recovery from surgery "should take three to four months, and I will be ready to go for training camp."
Jordan is a consensus Top 10 pick in the draft.
John Boyett
11 of 16PRO DAY RESULTS: DNP
Like Dion Jordan, safety John Boyett is also on the mend after surgery on both knees. Boyett, too, was just here to talk and make connections with the pro scouts.
Boyett's on-camera interview with ESPN's Kelly Stouffer was intense—what a surprise. You have to wonder if Boyett even makes toast intensely.
Boyett told Stouffer that team reps today said, "I will get to show some teams in April when I'm healed that I'm healthy and can move." For Boyett fans, it's great news to hear that he will have his own private workouts with teams.
When asked by Stouffer what he would tell NFL general managers who are concerned about his height not meeting the DB minimum, Boyett locked his gaze on Stouffer and said: "I would tell them that size doesn't matter if you make plays."
Pure Boyett.
Nick Morrison
12 of 16PRO DAY RESULTS:
Height: 6'2"
Weight: 260 pounds
40 Time: 5.06
Vertical Jump: 29
Broad Jump: 9'3"
20 Shuttle: 4.46
Results courtesy 247Sports.com
Reserve defensive lineman Nick Morrison also participated today. Pro day is important for guys like Morrison who need the visibility.
Show up. Be prepared. And give it your best shot.
Morrison did that today.
Will Murphy
13 of 16PRO DAY RESULTS:
Height: 6'2"
Weight: 193 pounds
40 Time: 4.51
Vertical Jump: 32
Broad Jump: 10'1"
20 Shuttle: 4.16
60 Shuttle: 11.40
Results courtesy 247Sports.com
Wide receiver Will Murphy was in attendance and performed in the drills. As with fellow receiver Rahsaan Vaughn, Murphy struggled to get catches in Oregon's run-oriented offense.
However, like Vaughn, Murphy has good NFL size at the WR position—he is 6'2", 193 pounds.
Bill Chimphalee
14 of 16PRO DAY RESULTS: NA
As far as I could tell, running back Bill Chimphalee was the only Duck coming off his junior year in attendance today. Chimphalee was a junior college transfer in 2012 and had two years of eligibility, so I'm not sure what the deal is with him.
If updates become available on Chimphalee's results, they will be posted here.
Kyle Long
15 of 16PRO DAY RESULTS:
Height: 6'6"
Weight: 312 pounds
Vertical Jump: 28
Broad Jump: 9'2"
40 Time: DNP
Bench Press: DNP
Results courtesy WalterFootball.com
Last, but most certainly not least, is offensive lineman Kyle Long.
Long targeted specific drills at which he wanted to improve his combine marks, but according to Rob Moseley of The Register-Guard, Long said he was mostly here to support his teammates, particularly guys who aren't getting as much draft buzz.
In an interview with ESPN, Long indicated that his focus today was on technique, and that he was concentrating on position drills. Like teammate Kenjon Barner, Long is very adept at interviews and was natural, funny and well-spoken. It's easy to imagine pro scouts falling under Long's spell.
Of course, it doesn't hurt that he's a beast.
The Draft
16 of 16Best of luck to all the Oregon Ducks and to former head coach Chip Kelly in the 2013 NFL draft.
We'll be watching April 25-27 to see how it all shakes out.
