World Baseball Classic 2013 Results: Scores and Recap of Yesterday's Action
Cuba, the 2006 runner-up in the World Baseball Classic, blasted overmatched China on Monday, 12-0.
The Cubans (2-0) racked up 15 hits against the Chinese (0-2), including three doubles, one triple and two home runs. They did most of their damage in the fourth and fifth inning, scoring a combined 10 runs.
First baseman Jose Dariel Abreu led the carnage, going 2-for-4 with five RBI and one run. That included a double and a monster grand slam in the fifth frame.
Second baseman Jose Hernandez also had a big game, going 3-of-4 with two RBI and four runs.
On the flip side, China managed only three singles on Monday. Cuban right-hander Danny Betancourt pitched 4.2 innings of scoreless ball, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out eight.
Abreu is a guy to keep an eye on during the 2013 WBC. If you haven't heard of him, check out the piece by Jonah Keri of Grantland.com in February 2012.
Abreu has hit .382 in Cuba's National Series this season, via BeisbolEnCuba.com. Even more shocking, he's clubbed 13 home runs in 136 at-bats.
South Korea, which was the runner-up in the 2009 WBC, came away with a convincing 6-0 shutout of Australia.
The South Koreans (1-1) notched 11 hits against the Australians, led by first baseman Seung Yuop Lee, who went 3-of-5 with one RBI and two runs. Lee had the team's two doubles.
Dae Ho Lee also stepped up for the team, going 3-of-4 with one RBI and one run.
South Korea got on the board early, scoring three runs courtesy of Hynsoo Kim (two RBI) and Ahseop Son (RBI—fielder's choice).
Right-hander Seung Song got the win, allowing two hits and two walks in four scoreless innings while notching five strikeouts.
The Netherlands (2-1) secured a spot in the second round late on Monday night with a 4-1 victory over Australia (0-3).
Baltimore Orioles third base prospect Jonathan Schoop led the offfensive attack for the Dutch team with a two-run home run in the second inning.
Atlanta Braves shortstop Andrelton Simmons went 1-of-4 with an RBI out of the lead-off spot, and Washington Nationals outfielder Roger Bernadina also had an RBI.
Starting pitcher Robbie Cordemans was effective for the Netherlands, throwing five innings of shutout baseball and allowing just two hits with three strikeouts.
Next up for the Netherlands will be a second-round matchup on Friday against the winner of the Japan/Cuba showdown that takes place on Wednesday.
Chinese Taipei (2-1) found itself on the losing end of a game for the first time in this World Baseball Classic. Korea (2-1) was trailing 2-0 entering the bottom of the eighth inning, but scored three runs, including a two-run homer off the bat of Jungho Kang, secured the victory.
However, due to tiebreakers and run differential, Chinese Taipei had to lose this game by at least four runs to be knocked out of the event. After the eighth inning was over, Taipei knew its fate and could just play out the top of the ninth.
Chinese Taipei will now wait for the loser of the Japan-Cuba game.
