Hatton-Pacquiao 24/7: Episode One
The Emmy Award-winning series made its return on Saturday night, showcasing the lives of Manny Pacquiao and Ricky Hatton in light of their May 2 fight in Las Vegas. In a first for the series, both fighters will have already been on the show before.
The first of four episodes was focused primarily on the differences in the two fighters camp's since their last appearances on the show. The true story to the ending of Billy Graham's involvement as Hatton's trainer was told, and Floyd Mayweather Sr. was introduced.
Billy Graham had been fired from Hatton's corner after Hatton's first professional loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr., followed by a lackluster homecoming performance against Juan Lazcano in Manchester.
Graham recalled how it ended, with bitterness in his voice. Floyd Mayweather Sr., is as loud and confident as they come. But so far he has backed up his talk, revitalizing Hatton's career with a TKO win over top contender Paulie Malignaggi in November.
Former Heavyweight champion Micheal Moorer is a new addition to the Pacquiao team and very willing to give advice. Roach gives the impression that Moorer being a new addition is a work in progress.
He seems unsure that Moorer will provide a positive effect and acts like he is only allowing it because he needs help with training duties. Pacquiao is shown in the ring sparring with overmatched sparring partners, who are all shown being medically attended to afterwards.
For those who felt that 24/7 takes a step back when Floyd Mayweather Jr. is not involved, I would say I would have agreed. That is, until the P4P champ's father was introduced to the show.
While Hatton and Pacquiao aren't the ones to trash talk, It has become appearent that Mayweather Sr. and Freddie Roach are more than willing to pick up the slack. While Roach and Mayweather Sr. have yet to insult each other through one episode, Mayweather did recite one of his trademark poems, suggesting that Pacquiao is in for a rude awakening.
The show once against focused on the harsh reality that Pacquiao's home country faces. The Philipines apparent danger forces Pacquiao to have armed guards in tow on every outing.
A bright spot though, is the enormous reception at the christening of Pacquiao's newborn daughter, Queen Elizabeth. Manny also looked in great shape, like he could make the required weight of 140 pounds tomorrow if he had two.
Hatton, known for his weight gain between fights, looked about 10 to 15 pounds over. This is quite normal for him at this point in his training camp.
Overall, episode one was great and they will only get better. The first episode always tends to be the "worst" because you have to get everyone introduced and all of the changes shown before the drama and pre-fight hype can begin. Set your DVR now, this series is a can't miss!
