On-Site Sunday 7:00 PM at The Masters (Holes 14,15,16)

Andy ReistetterApr 12, 2009

Below is a chronological log of the exciting play on Holes Nos. 16 and 17 and the leader board changes for the fourth and final round of the 2009 Masters. Both holes played a significant part in determining who emerged as the winner of the 2009 Masters.

On No. 15 there were two eagles though none by the leaders. Tiger Woods and especially Phil Mickelson missed makeable eagle putts.

The par-three 16th hole was decisive in that Kenny Perry almost aced the hole. His tap-in deuce gave him a two stroke lead with two holes to go. Due to a bogey-bogey finish there was a sudden death playoff to determine the 2009 Masters Champion.

The weather today is perfect for the conclusion of the 73rd Masters Tournament at Augusta National. It is most sunny with temperatures peaking in the mid 70s. The winds are out of the east varying between 10 and 15 mph.

The hole location on No. 15 today is back right 16 of 24 paces back and nine paces from the right edge.

1:25    Kevin Sutherland is the first to tee off on the par-five 15th hole today. Lefty 2003 Masters Champion Mike Weir his playing partner is next.

1:35 Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson paired together are teeing off on No. 1.

1:36 Mike Weir is first player to reach green in two. He misses his 30 foot eagle putt and taps in for birdie.

1:42 Both Mediate on the left back fringe and Jimenez in the right bunker reach the green in two swings. No. 15 is playing downwind. Three of first four players reached the green.

1:52 Steve Flesch eagles No. 2 and birdies No. 3 to go three-under for the day and gets to six-under with an early charge.

1:57 Ben Curtis from 230 yards launches a high shot that hits softly and releases to the edge of the back fringe past the hole. Andres Romero hits a five-iron from 201 yards. Possible eagle fest on No. 15 today. Curtis leaves the eagle attempt short but taps in to go two-under on his round today. Romero missed the green and chipped to 12 feet and three putts for bogey.

2:10 Bubba Watson hits a 350-yard drive and hits eight-iron to 15 feet trying to duplicate his eagle here on Friday. He two-putts for birdie.

2:16 Mickelson birdies Nos. 2 and 3 to get to six-under. Tiger Woods birdied No. 2 too and is at five-under par.

2:19 Last week Shell Houston winner Paul Casey from 212 yards is just over the green and will have a 30-foot chip for eagle.

2:29 Steve Stricker starting off in fifth place four strokes back pars the first hole. The native Wisconsin man has not bogeyed a hole since the second hole of the second round- that’s a streak of 35 holes. By the way he made eight birdies along the way.

2:40 Phil Mickelson birdies No. 5 to get to seven-under to get within four strokes of the lead as the leaders Angel Cabrera and Kenny Perry tee off the first hole.

2:44 Jim Furyk starting in fourth place three strokes back and Chad Campbell starting in second place two strokes back both par the difficult par-four first hole at Augusta National.

2:47 Both Cabrera and Perry par the first hole. The final round of the 2009 Masters is completely underway. A champion may be decided in the next four hours.

2:48 Mickelson deuces No. 6 to go to eight-under and three behind the leaders.

2:50 Defending champion Trevor Immelman carries the green in two. His best finish since winning last year was a playoff loss to Justin Leonard in the St. Jude. He finished T10 at the Tour championship.

3:02 Mickelson birdies the seventh hole. He is five-under par through seven holes. Now only two strokes behind the leaders- what a start!

3:08 Chad Campbell birdies No. 3 to get to 10-under and within a stroke of the lead.

3:16 Angel Cabrera birdies No. 3 to go to 12-under and take his first lead of the 209 Masters Tournament.

3:22 Tiger Woods eagles the par-five No. 8 to get to seven-under and is tied for fifth place. Mickelson birdies for his fourth straight hole to reach six-under for the day and 10-under for the tournament and is now tied for third with Chad Campbell two behind Cabrera and one behind Perry.

3:36 Cabrera bogeys par-three fourth hole to fall back into a tie for the lead with Perry.

3:40 Aaron Baddeley’s 68 on Thursday was his best Masters score by four strokes. He barely missed a 20 footer for eagle on No. 15 and does the “I can’t believe it did not go in” little hop two step. Or it may have been the “away we go” Jackie Gleason tip toe dance.

3:43 Mickelson pars No. 9 for a six-under 30 on the front nine. With two eagle-able par-fives on the back nine is there any doubt the excitement is back at the Masters on Sunday.

“It’s the weather stupid,” I think is what Chairman Billy Payne told the media on Wednesday when fielding criticism of the lack of Masters excitement the last two years.

3:51 Cabrera bogeys his second hole in a row at No. 5 to fall into a second place tie with Campbell and Mickelson. “All pars today” Kenny Perry is alone atop the leader board at the 2009 Masters Tournament. Stricker continues his par streak too through No. 7 now at 41 straight holes without a bogey.

4:00 Justin Rose, the English rose knocks in a 10-footer for the first eagle of the day at No. 15, eighth of the tournament.

4:06 Geoff Ogilvy pitches up from across the pond for a gimmie birdie after being in the pine trees off the tee.

4:10 Dustin Johnson carries over the 15th green from 197 yards after eagling the last two holes- the par-five 13th and the par-four 14th. He eagled No. 15 on Friday. How about three eagles in a row?

4:12 John Merrick hits one to four feet at the 16th for his fourth birdie in a row to go to 8-under three strokes behind the leaders.

4:13 Chad Campbell birdies No. 8 to tie Perry for the lead at 11-under- back where he belongs before double bogeying the 16th from the back right bunker yesterday.

4:15 Furyk birdies No. 8 to go to nine-under and two behind the leaders.

4:15 Johnson gets it up and down to birdie No. 15 and be five-under for his last three holes.

4:16 Merrick drains the putt to go to eight-under par and is in sixth place alone.

4:20 Mickelson double bogeys No. 12 to fall to eight-under par and is tied for fifth with Merrick.

4:31 Camilo Villegas drains a 12 footer for eagle only the second on the day.

4:32 Jim Furyk double bogeys No. 9.

4:34 Campbell bogeys No. 9 to drop into a second place tie with Cabrera now one behind Perry the leader of the 200 Masters Tournament at this point in time.

4:35 Mickelson birdies No. 13 to go to nine-under and solo fourth place two strokes behind Perry. Woods birdies No. 13 too to go to eight-under and tied for fifth place with Merrick.

4:39 Villegas and Flesch birdie No. 16.

4:47 Mickelson tees off No. 15 at 5-under for the day and within two strokes of the lead. He absolutely pounds one down the fairway and will easily reach the green in two. Woods is 4-under for the day and one stroke worse. His drive is in the go position, too.

4:53 Tiger hits first and does so masterfully with the ball releasing to within 15 feet. Mickelson one ups him with a high iron shot from 187 yards to within four feet. These two have fed off one another today. How about eagle-eagle on No. 15?

4:55 Cabrera bogeys No. 10 to fall to two strokes behind bogey less leader Kenny Perry.

4:58 Tiger burns the right edge and can not believe it did not go in. Now Mickelson for eagle and a share of the lead. Mickelson misses too. If he pars No. 12 and makes that he could have had a two stroke lead. The leaders are standing still.

They can be passed. But they still have the two reachable par-5s on the back nine to play. What an exciting Masters!

5:04 As they tee off the par-three 16th Mickelson at 10-under is alone in second place one stroke behind Perry. Tiger is nine-under and tied for third place with Campbell and Cabrera two strokes back. Tiger’s tee shot is tight within five feet. Mickelson is 20 feet from the hole.

5:06 Stricker bogeyed the eighth hole a long time ago and is currently in13th place alone. The streak ended at 41 holes without a bogey.

5:07 Lee Westwood’s third shot goes into the front pond on No.15.

5:09 Mickelson misses. Tiger makes. Tiger ties Mickelson at 10-under and both are in second place together one stroke behind Perry. Woods is bogey less with four birdies and one eagle on No. 8. Mickelson has eight birdies but also that double bogey on No. 12. Mickelson is even par on the back nine. Tiger is three-under.

Their best ball is nine-under par through 16 holes, not that that matters.

5:11 Campbell deuces the 12th hole to tie Mickelson and Woods for second place.

5:17 John Merrick and Steve Flesch are in the clubhouse at 8-under and have no chance of the leaders coming back to them. This is an exciting back nine at the Masters.

5:19 Perry deuces the 12th hole to go two strokes ahead in his quest for the green jacket this beautiful Easter Sunday afternoon at Augusta National. Six holes left to play.

5:21 Lee Westwood goes into the water on No. 16, too.

5:23 Tiger bogeys No. 17. Mickelson pars.

5:27 Chad Campbell birdies No. 13 to get within one stroke of his good friend Kenny Perry.

5:35 Sean O’Hair with five footer on No. 16 to get to eight-under. The putt rims out.

5:38 Shingo Katayama rims out a short birdie putt on No. 15 to get to nine-under. He remains at eight-under.

5:40 Mickelson and Woods both bogey No. 18. Mickelson shoots 67 and finishes at 9-under and is currently in fourth place. Woods shoots 68 with a bogey-bogey finish and finishes at eight-under and is currently tied for fifth place with Merrick, Flesch, Katayama and Furyk.

Both had outstanding rounds but could not get it to the clubhouse. Mickelson shooting a one over par on the back nine.

5:42 Cabrera birdies No. 13 to get back to 10-under. Perry pars.

5:44 Katayama almost holes his tee shot on No. 16 on the fly. He makes the 15 footer coming back to get to nine-under.

5:49 Campbell one behind Perry hits a great second shot onto No. 15 green and will have a 20 foot eagle putt to take the lead.

5:52 Rory Sabbatini in his purple Easter egg outfit hits a great shot that almost hops in the hole for an ace.

5:54 Campbell two putts for birdie and ties Perry at 12-under two strokes clear of Cabrera and three better than clubhouse leader Mickelson and Katayama who has two remaining holes to play.

5:59 Chad Campbell tees it up on No. 16 the site of his reported demise after a double bogey. Today he almost holes it and has a 10 footer for birdie to take the lead.

6:02 Cabrera’s third shot on No. 15 is well done and a tap-in birdie remains to get him to 11-under one behind the co-leaders at the moment.

6:03 Perry has an eagle putt from the far left of the green to the right hole location a distance of 80 feet. He needs a two putt for birdie to offset Campbell’s likely birdie at No. 16. He lags it up past the hole to the right with a three footer remaining to regain the lead. He makes the putt and is the leader in the Masters with three holes remaining.

6:06 Now Campbell for birdie. No it slides off to the right and leaves a tester of three feet remaining. As Perry looks at the scoreboard at the 15th green within eyesight Campbell converts for par. He is one stroke behind Perry. Cabrera is two strokes behind Perry.

6:09 Cabrera has honors from his birdie at No. 13 and uses the slope resulting in a makeable 10 footer for birdie. Perry now with eight-iron swings and walks and likes it and as well he should. The ball releases and rolls towards the hole for a possible ace.

It stops a foot away meaning Kenny Perry will have a two shot lead with two holes remaining to win his first major championship- The Masters.

6:14 Cabrera converts for his second birdie in a row to not lose ground to Perry- he remains two strokes back same as Campbell.

Perry would finish bogey bogey while Campbell and Cabrera finished par-par to force a three-way playoff. Campbell bogeys the first playoff hole No. 18 and is eliminated. Cabrera and Perry both tie and move on to hole No. 10. Perry bogeys. Cabrera pars to win the coveted green jacket and the 2009 Masters Tournament.

The hole on No. 16 is in the traditional Sunday location on the lower left ledge 12 feet from the edge of the green with the long right bunker and water close by.

1:39 Mike Weir is first to tee off on the par-three 16th.

2:11 Andres Romero on the upper ledge putts with his back to the hole doing he reverse of Tiger to navigate the tricky slopes of the 16th green. He makes a six-footer to save par and avoid a second consecutive three-putt.

2:33 Paul Casey drains a 30 footer down the slope that rattles around the hole a bit before it goes down to get to four-under for the day. A mid-60 score is possible for one of the leaders or someone coming out of the pack.

2:54 Trevor Immelman, defending Masters Champion aced the 16th on Sunday in 2005 with exactly the same hole location. This one is nearly as good as it lands within a foot of the hole. Immelman drains the six footer for birdie. Imada also birdies for the third birdie of the day at No. 16.

3:15 Ken Duke misses a six footer after stuffing one in there close.

3:21 Playing partners Rory McIlroy and Luke Donald hit shots within 10 feet and deuce No. 16 the fourth and fifth birdies of the day.

This log was discontinued due to the excitement of the Masters. See Hole No. 15 for the conclusion.
