Rusty Wallace May Move His Two Car Nationwide Team to Cup in 2010

Horn FanApr 12, 2009

Rusty Wallace, an owner in the NASCAR Nationwide Series, said with the right situation he'll move his two car team to Sprint Cup in 2010.

He fields two Chevrolets for his son Steve and rookie Brendan Gaughan.

To make the move, Wallace would need to do two things.

First, RWR would need to secure the right amount of sponsorship to make the move. Second, they need to form a partnership or alliance with an existing team to enable him to stock enough inventory to increase his number of engines and cars.

He already gets his engines for his Nationwide team from Richard Childress Racing and has talked casually with the team about an alliance with RCR.

"I'd definitely be looking at doing some type of technology merger with a team, and the one that makes the most sense is Childress," Wallace said.

"That'd be a quick way to get going."

Wallace's race shop in Mooresville, N.C. would be adequate to field a Cup team, even though it's a bit tight when it comes to space. They already work on the car bodies and have a fabrication area.

While it's not as large compared to some of the other Cup shops square footage-wise, Wallace has been told they could very easily run two cup teams out of the existing shop.

In 2004, Gaughan was Wallace's teammate at Penske Racing, so he has a year of Cup under his belt.

Currently, he's a rookie contender in the Nationwide Series; after six races he's eighth in the points. He won a pole and collected two top 10 finishes.

Young Wallace is in his third full year in the Nationwide Series, and has been putting together some decent runs of late. He looks like he's over the "let's wreck the field" phase.

Currently, the young Wallace sits 12th in points and has three top 10 finishes after six races.

"I want to move up," Wallace said.

"My goal was to get Stephen up to speed. Looks like the crashing has finally stopped. The good finishes are happening. We've got all this year of Nationwide to go."

"Then I think it's time, instead of getting stalled out in one series, to move up and do something different. I don't care if people agree with you or they don't."

It sure would be exciting to see Rusty Wallace back in Sprint Cup, but this time around as an owner. It will be interesting to see if his goal becomes a reality in 2010.

Happy Easter all, enjoy the good times with friends and family.
