The Cavs and The Cav-Nots

Dan SmithApr 10, 2009

The Cavs are in the race for best record in the NBA. With an 0-2 record against the Lakers this season, it is imperative that they win their final four games and hold onto the best record in the NBA's regular season.

The Lakers had a two-game losing streak that gave the Cavs a three-game lead for the best record, and the Cavs gave two of those games back when they had their own two-game skid. The second loss a very bad one against the Orlando Magic.

The Lakers do not have as tough a path for a return trip to the NBA Finals. The Western Conference has more solid teams in the one through eight slots, but the Eastern Conference is far more top heavy with the Cavs, Celtics and Magic.

The Lakers were not really tested in last year's Western playoffs, then ran into the Boston buzz saw. The same might occur this season, as they are the clear favorite in the West.

The buzz saw this post season for them might be the Cavs. The Cavs have a good chance of coming out of the East since they have all but locked up home court through out the Eastern playoffs.

They have struggled in Boston and Orlando this season, so they might have to go through a seven game series in the East Finals to get to the NBA Finals. The format is in their favor, as they will only have to play one of the other top three teams.

The Magic and Celtics should have an epic second round series, with the survivor having to go through Cleveland to get to the Finals. The Cavs might have to face the athletic Hawks in the second round and, although it should be a fun series, it should not go the full seven games.

An NBA Finals pitting the Cavs versus the Lakers is NBA commissioner David Stern's dream matchup. Two of the biggest stars on two of the best teams this season on showcase during prime time with the whole world watching.

LeBron's first trip to the Finals was a cup of coffee against the superior Spurs. Kobe has lost in his last two trips to the Finals, and one of those losses spawned a horrible rap by Shaq.

It would be easy to wait and see how the regular season ends, then say that the team with home court will win the Finals. The Lakers and Cavs will meet in the Finals this post season, and the Cavs will win it all. If they have home court, then they will win it in Cleveland in Game Six. If they have to go through LA, then they will win it in the City of Angels in Game Six. Either way, the Cavs win their first NBA title in six games.

After that, the talk will not be about the Cavs repeating in 2010, rather where LeBron will be in 2011.
