NFL Draft Version 1.0

John WempleApr 9, 2009

I have decided to take a shot at this and do a mock draft. I am really new at this and can't assure you how accurate these predictions are, so bear with me.

1. QB, Matt Stafford, Georgia: Detroit Lions

The 0-16 Detroit Lions have a lot of holes to fill to be even close to contending. Where better to start than the quarterback position?

Stafford has a cannon arm and can squeeze the ball in right where it needs to be.

2. T, Jason Smith, Baylor: St. Louis Rams

The Rams have a few missing pieces to the puzzle and Marc Bulger has proved he can shine at times by putting up pro bowl numbers.

Smith is just one of the standout tackles in this years draft. Many questioned Smith's pedigree, but after his work at the NFL Combine he proved that he is among this class's elite.

3. LB, Aaron Curry, Wake Forrest: Kansas City Chiefs

The Chiefs put an end to their quarterback questions by acquiring Matt Cassel from New England, now they turn to the defense and on the board is just maybe the best player in the whole draft in Curry.

The Chiefs added Mike Vrabel who could mentor the star Linebacker.

4. T, Eugene Monroe, Virginia: Seattle Seahawks

Seattle has proved over the last few years that they can contend with anyone with a healthy Matt Hasselbeck, but keeping him clean has been an issue.

Drafting Monroe here could solidify their offensive line and maybe bring a division title back to Seattle.

5. WR, Michael Crabtree, Texas Tech: Cleveland Browns

With Kellen Winslow Jr. in Tampa Bay and an unhappy Braylon Edwards in Cleveland, the Browns are in a position to draft the surest bet in this draft, Michael Crabtree.

This kid proved as a freshman at Texas Tech that he was NFL ready. He has the size and speed to be every bit as good as Larry Fitzgerald.

If the Browns can settle on a quarterback they could be competing with Baltimore and Pittsburgh in the AFC north.

6. DE, Brian Orakpo, Texas: Cincinatti Bengals

The Bengals have high expectations every year but often leave their fans bitterly disappointed.

The defense can get a beast on the defensive line here in Orakpo. He was an outstanding player at the University of Texas, and with his size and speed he could the face of this defense for years to come.

7. WR, Jeremy Maclin, Missouri: Oakland Raiders

They have their franchise quarterback and running back, now they can go get a tall, fast, and agile playmaker in Maclin.

Another redshirt sophomore who is not as skilled as Crabtree but has the makings of an elite NFL wide receiver.

8. T, Andre Smith, Alabama: Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jags have been a very inconsistent club the past couple of years due to the play of the offensive line.

David Garrard has proved to be a pretty good quarterback and with time he could become even better.

Smith's weight has been questioned but he was a sure bet to give someone a rough time at Alabama.

9. DT, B.J. Raji, Boston College: Green Bay Packers

With the Packers moving to a 3-4 they should probably look for a standout defensive lineman. Raji is a big stud out of BC and could add to what is already an amazing defense.

10. QB, Mark Sanchez, USC: San Francisco 49ers

Mike Singletary took over this squad in the middle of the 2008 season and had great success.

The 49ers have very few question marks and could fill the void at quarterback by adding Sanchez. He has pinpoint accuracy and can get it where it needs to be.

His stock rose due to a impressive Rose Bowl win over Penn State.

11. DE, Aaron Maybin, Penn State: Buffalo Bills

Critics questioned if Maybin was ready for the NFL, after a disappointing Rose Bowl.

Maybin then answered by standing out at the NFL combine. The Bills could use his versatility.

12. DE, Robert Ayers, Tennessee: Denver Broncos

This team believes they can compete with Kyle Orton, so on the defensive side of the ball the Broncos are basically living with a bunch of role players on their line. They could go Ayers or Tyson Jackson here.

13. QB, Josh Freeman, Kansas State: Washington Redskins

Redskins fans have their hopes high running into this season, but it seems like the front office is questioning quarterback Jason Campbell's abilities to lead this team.

They are stacked on defense and addressed their Wide Receiver issue last year. Freeman could be a reach here.

14. HB, Chris "Beanie" Wells, Ohio State: New Orleans Saints

Wells is a powerful fast back who can pound the football for the short stuff. This guy would be a great complement to Reggie Bush.

15. WR, Darrius Heyward-Bey, Maryland: Houston Texans

Heyward-Bey is a fast lengthy receiver who would look great next to league standout Andre Johnson.

The Texans would like to get over the hump and compete for a playoff berth this season. Bey could be the missing ingredient.

16. HB, Knowshon Moreno, Georgia: San Diego Chargers

Lets face it, LT is getting older and isn't going to stand out like he once did. Moreno is a speedy and elusive back who will kill you in the open field.

If Phillip Rivers isn't the face of the franchise, this guy very well could be.

17. WR, Percy Harvin, Florida: New York Jets

With questions still unanswered at quarterback, and no first round QBs left, the Jets are looking for a standout receiver.

Percy Harvin is a fast, explosive guy who can give you almost anything. He can run, catch, and return kicks. This guy is dangerous.

18. CB, Malcom Jenkins, Ohio State: Chicago Bears

I remember when teams feared playing that Chicago defense. Now all you have to do is air it out and you will more than likely come out with a win.

This secondary is good but Jenkins becomes a star immediately at Chicago.

19. CB, Vontae Davis, Illinois: Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Another team who missed out on Jay Cutler. Just like the Jets, there is not a QB on the board at this stage. It makes sense to draft Ronde Barber's replacement.

20. LB, Rey Maualuga, USC: Detroit Lions (From Dallas)

They got their franchise quarterback, now go get the face of the defense. Maualuga is a hard hitting machine who reads the run well.

21. T, Michael Oher, Ole Miss: Philadelphia Eagles

The eagles really need to address four positions in this draft; left tackle, running back, wide receiver, and safety.

If they don't make a splash for Anquan Boldin or Braylon Edwards, they could fill the void at left tackle by drafting this haas out of Ole Miss.

22. LB, Clay Matthews, USC: Minnesota Vikings

The Vikes already have a great defense, Matthews gives them some depth here at No. 22.

23: DE, Tyson Jackson, LSU: New England Patriots

It's not easy playing next to Glenn Dorsey. Jackson is a big explosive guy who can replace the aging ends for the Pats.

This guys stock fell because of LSU's defensive collapse down the stretch.

24. TE, Brandon Pettigrew, Oklahoma State: Atlanta Falcons

The Falcons missed out on free agent L.J. Smith. Adding Pettigrew would give Matt Ryan another weapon and he is also a  great blocking threat.

25. DT, Peria Jerry, Ole Miss: Miami Dolphins

No the Dolphins didn't acquire this pick by a trade. Bill Parcels has turned this team around and they could be a great threat this year to make the playoffs again.

Adding an explosive guy who lives in the backfield like Jerry would do wonders for this club.

26. LB, Brian Cushing, USC: Baltimore Ravens

Who knew Southern Cal could produce such great linebackers? Just kidding, Cushing could fill the spot Bart Scott left.

27. WR, Kenny Britt, Rutgers: Indianapolis Colts

With Marvin Harrison's release, the Colts could use a No. 2 now. Britt is a tall and speedy guy who is a great down-field threat.

28. S, Sean Smith, Utah: Philadelphia Eagles (From Carolina)

No one ever said replacing Brian Dawkins was gonna be easy. This guy can come in immediately and compete with Quentin Demps for the starting job.

29. WR, Hakeem Nicks, North Carolina: New York Giants

The release of Plaxico Burress leaves the G-men with a giant hole at wide receiver.

Nicks is a tall and speedy guy with great hands. A great weapon for Eli Manning.

30. DT, Jarron Gilbert, San Diego State: Tennessee Titans

Replacing the best defensive tackle in the league is hard to do. The Titans will try by adding Gilbert, who lives in opponent's backfields.

31. HB, LeSean McCoy, Pittsburgh: Arizona Cardinals

A fast back who could eventually take Edgerrin Jame's job and open up great for Kurt Warner's pass offense.

32. C, Alex Mack, Califorinia: Pittsburgh Steelers

If the Steelers had any weakness on their Superbowl team from a year ago, it had to be the O-Line.

Mack is a strong interior lineman who could be giving the snaps to Ben Rothelisburger in the near future.

Top three prospects at each skill position next year:

QB:

1. Sam Bradford (Oklahoma)

2. Colt McCoy (Texas)

3. Jevan Snead (Ole Miss)

HB:

1. DeMarco Murray (Oklahoma)

2. C.J. Gable (USC)

3. Boom Herron (Ohio State)

WR:

1. Dez Bryant (Oklahoma State)

2. Ronald Johnson (USC)

3. Jordan Shipley (Texas)

Thank you for reading my draft.
