Braylon Edwards: Trade Scenario To Seattle

Lars HansonApr 7, 2009

There has been a rumor going around that the Seattle Seahawks would like to acquire current Cleveland Browns wide reciever Braylon Edwards.

On 950 KJR in Seattle, there was speculation that the Hawks would be willing to send a second round draft pick this season and a “day two” pick next year to the Browns, who traded tight end Kellen Winslow to the Tampa Bay Bucs for a second round pick and a fifth round pick next season. Now I asked Mike Sando from ESPN and he can’t confirm that rumor but there is interest on Seattle’s part in Edwards.

How much is the question.

The Seahawks have a new wide reciever in T.J Houshmandzadeh, who will become the new No. 1 guy for Matt Hasselbeck. Also, Houshmandzadeh isn’t as old as everyone makes him out to be because he’s known as one of the leagues most reliable wideouts.

Houshmanzadeh doesn’t drop as many passes as T.O, who is old. Seattle also has wide recievers Deion Branch and Nate Burleson. Branch has a knee scope today and Jim Mora Jr. aid it was “no biggie”.

I’m guessing that the Seahawks should cut Branch and his heavy salary if they trade for Edwards, which they should do. Burleson is a good slot receiver that just had a knee injury so he didn’t play all but one game last season and he was at the Seahawks mini camp running routs.

So here is what the Seahawks can do to get Braylon Edwards who can help out greatly at wide reciever. First, they need to cut Branch. Secondly, they could trade a second round pick (2009 draft) and a third OR fourth round pick next year for Edwards.

Now with that being said, it’s a fair trade because it’s basically what they got for Winslow. Seattle will have to do the same thing that the Bucs did with Winslow, which is extend him because he’s a free agent next year and Seattle is going to need him beyond this year. It should come to maybe $5 to 6 million over five years, like a five-year, $32 million deal.

Now paring Edwards most likely as a No. 2 with Houshmandzadeh, Burleson and tight end John Carlson, Seattle's offense should be alive and well.

Now, the safe thing to do is to draft a quarterback like Stafford OR Sanchez. That way they have a good, young wide recieving core and now they need a good, young quarterback to mold behind Hasselbeck for a year. Then if Hasselbeck has a great year, next year they can trade him for a first round pick and get more picks so that they could possibly trade up to get Taylor Mays.

Now I’m not saying this will happen, this is just a possibility/trade scenario.

Let me know your thoughts.
