The Coaching Carousel: NFC South

Michael WhooleyApr 7, 2009

Every off-season, fantasy owners, and football fans in general, tune in to find out which free agents are heading where. Signings like T.O. heading to the Buffalo Bills and TJ Houshmandzadeh's journey to the Northwest, where he'll join the Seattle Seahawks, are analyzed and scrutinized by everyone from ESPN to the guy sitting in the cubicle next to you as everyone attempts to figure out how these new additions will fit in in their new systems.

Strangely enough though, the coaching changes that occur each and every off-season garner much less attention despite these holding much more significance. After all, the coaches are the ones devising the systems that guys like T.O. and Housh will be playing in. But, don't worry, the Bruno Boys, as usual, have you covered as we take a look at the Coaching Carousel of the NFL, breaking down all the important coaching changes division by division.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers' Head Coach & Offensive Coordinator

Out: Jon Gruden (Head Coach), Bill Muir (Offensive Coordinator)
In: Rasheem Morris (Head Coach), Jeff Jagodzinski (Offensive Coordinator)

Following the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' week 13 win over the New Orleans Saints, a win that propelled the team to a 9-3 record, Jon Gruden's job status seemed pretty secure

Four straight losses to end the season, and Gruden, rather than looking at a trip to the playoffs, was looking at a trip to the unemployment line. The Buccaneers after parting ways with Gruden, turned in house for his replacement, promoting Raheem Morris from defensive backs coach to the coveted head coaching slot.

Morris' expertise is defense. In addition to the defensive backs position he has occupied the last two seasons with the Bucs, Morris has also served as the team's defensive quality control coach in 2002, defensive assistant in 2003, and assistant defensive backs coach in 2004 and 2005.

He, also, served one year as Kansas State's defensive coordinator in 2006. With that background, Morris should be able to keep the team among the top 10 in defenses (they ranked 9th last season), but his impact on the offensive side of the ball will be minimal.

Thus, Morris brought in former Boston College head coach, Jeff Jagodzinski, to devise the team's offensive game plan. The coach, who helped mold Matt Ryan into the successful QB he is today, also had a hand in the top 10 finish of the Green Bay Packers in total offense in 2006, a year in which they averaged 341.1 yards per game.

While serving as offensive coordinator he helped the Atlanta Falcons lead the league in rushing in 2005 as the team's offensive line coach, and aided the development of Bubba Franks during his tenure as tight ends coach for the Packers from 1999 to 2003.

With Jagodzinski calling the plays, look for the Bucs to run often, utilizing newly signed free agent, Derrick Ward, and hold overs Earnest Graham and Cadillac Williams.

Furthermore, with his background as a tight ends coach, Jagodzinski should make the most out of Kellen Winslow, Alex Smith, and Jerramy Stevens. Focusing on getting those two aspects of the offense going, should allow for big plays down field to Antonio Bryant. If all works out as planned, the Bucs could make it back to the top 10 among offenses in the NFL for the first time since 2003.
