Jay Cutler Is the New Brett Favre of Overexposure
If you are as die-hard of a sports fan as I am, your morning routine most likely looks a little something like this:
- Hit the snooze button two or three times
- Roll out of bed and throw on a pair of shorts
- Make your way downstairs and make breakfast
- Turn on SportsCenter while you eat
As a sports fan, watching SportsCenter in the morning is one of the main highlights of my day. Not only do I get to watch highlights of my favorite sports teams, but I get to watch amazing highlights of some of the best athletes in the world.

Rookie WRs Who Will Outplay Their Draft Value 📈
I love SportsCenter so much, I find myself watching it two or three times in a row (I know what you're thinking, what's the point of watching the same highlights over and over when you know the outcome).
At one point, I couldn't imagine what my life would be like if I didn't have ESPN each morning to start my day. However, I have found myself spending less time watching SportsCenter over the last couple of weeks.
Is it because of my job? Is it because of how much extra homework I've had? Is it because I have lost an interest in sports?
Unfortunately, none of the above is the reasoning behind why I haven't been watching as much SportsCenter. In fact, I made a personal choice to watch less SportsCenter and devote a little time each morning to reruns of Saved By The Bell on TBS. What could possibly make me turn away from my beloved SportsCenter?
Two words: Jay Cutler
Before I continue, I want to make it clear that I have absolutely nothing against Jay Cutler. I believe he is an outstanding quarterback and the situation between him and the Denver Broncos has gotten out of hand during the last couple of weeks.
That is the main reason why I haven't been able to watch SportsCenter as much lately. The story between Cutler and the Broncos has gotten so out of control that viewers can expect at least one headline story on Cutler for each hour on SportsCenter.
Each day over the last couple of weeks, there always seemed to be at least one new update in the Cutler saga. Culter wants to be traded. Cutler doesn't want to be traded. Cutler refuses to meet with coach McDaniels.
Jay Cutler will be one of the top stories in the media until the start of the regular season in September. When the draft takes place in April, analysts will talk about the impact of the Cutler trade for the Bears and Broncos draft picks. When mini-camp and pre-season take place in the summer, Cutler's performance for the Bears will be a main topic of interest.
No matter what happens over the next couple of months, the incident with Jay Cutler in Denver will be in the headlines. Which is the exact reason why he has reached the same level of Brett Favre.
He may not have the same career numbers as Favre. He may not have the same experience as Favre. However, Jay Cutler has hit a pinnacle in his career where the story about his situation in Denver was overexposed by the media to a level where everybody just got annoyed hearing about it, just like Brett Favre's retirement plans were.
The main difference between Jay Cutler and Brett Favre's situation is that Favre's retirement plans were discussed by the media for more than just a few months. Favre's discussion on retirement plans lasted for multiple seasons. I respect Favre for his love toward the game of football. You don't see that from too many guys in the league anymore.
Unfortunately, Favre found himself in the same situation that Cutler is in now with the media. Their situations are overexposed so much by the media that fans just get annoyed hearing about them.
Fans respected Favre because of the way that he played for the Packers his entire career. When he spent months trying to make a decision on whether or not he would retire from the game of football, the media's overexposure made certain fans sick of Favre.
Brett Favre had an amazing career in the NFL. His love and passion for the game of football will always be remembered by fans.
Jay Cutler has had a great start to his career in the NFL. I'm not taking anybody's side in the situation that went down in Denver. However, it's a shame to see everything play out the way it did for Cutler and his fans. This incident between him and the Broncos has made fans sick of him because it's all they hear about in the media.
What makes this situation even more annoying is the fans in Denver who loved Cutler and were excited for his future potential. To go from a guy who had 25 touchdown passes last season, to Kyle Orton who has 30 touchdown passes in his career, has to be disappointing.
It's a shame to see Jay Cutler go through everything he has gone through with Denver over the last couple of weeks. It's also a shame that his situation in Denver is as annoying to hear about now as Brett Favre's retirement plans were when he was still in the NFL.
