Bernard Hopkins Did a Decent Job as the Fight Commentator Tonight

King JApr 4, 2009

Golden Boy co-partner and future hall of fame fighter Bernard "Executioner" Hopkins was the ringside commentator tonight for the Lightweight Lightning PPV. Ex was filling in as the "Jim Lampley" for tonight's lightweight extravaganza which was more so the coming out party for KO artist Edwin Valero.

Ex was joined by Doug Fischer a long time journalist and commentator for Max Boxing. Surprisingly both Ex and Fischer did a great job at calling the fight and providing background insight into the fighters featured tonight.

Due to Bernard's experienced career as a boxer he was able to provide a more deeper analysis of what was going on with each of the fights on tonight's card. It is definitely refreshing to have a seasoned veteran hall of famer behind the mic calling the fight who has actually walked the walk.

I was more so impressed with how professional and objective Hopkins was. We are so use to the obnoxious, complaining Hopkins that always boasts why he feels he won the fight he just lost, or the biased promoter side of Hopkins that is being extremely over aggressive and controversial just to sell a fight or get inside his opponent's head.

But tonight was a much different Hopkins, one that I could actually be a fan of.

Doug Fischer is some one I always looked up to. I always see him being interviewed in the HBO, Showtime promos for up coming fights. I always personally see him at the fights that I attend in Las Vegas.

I had the privilege of meeting Fischer last December at the Oscar De La Hoya vs Manny Pacquiao fight. Fischer is a real down to earth guy who keeps it real and really knows his boxing.

I hope he does not mind me saying this but he was pretty much celebrating and buying all of his buddies drinks that night, maybe it had to do with the fact that he just landed a new six figure deal to do what he loves best: write and talk about boxing.

That to me is just probably the most beautiful and amazing thing, to get paid handsomely for what you love doing.

So back to tonight's coming out party for the boxer named Edwin Valero. Valero dominated from the opening bell landing power shot after power shot on Antonio Pitalua clearly winning the first round.

In the second round Valero landed a perfect right hook on the chin of Pitalua knocking him down hard. Pitalua got up but his legs never came back and Valero landed about 7 more power shots all unanswered until the ref came and stopped the fight.

Edwin Valero improves his impressive record to 25 wins 25 KO's and becomes the WBC lightweight champion of the world.

Valero stated that he likes Juan Diaz and would be happy to fight him and Juan Manuel Marquez is the big man in the lightweight division and would like to fight him as well.

Valero also stated that he would possibly like the Pacquiao vs Hatton winner as well and that both his power and speed will remain at 140 if he went up.

Hopkin's made a comparison of tonight's display from Valero by saying, "He has the goods", much like how Pacquiao made a name for himself when he first came onto the scene.

I jokingly write about how Valero's groovy '70s hair style definitely is unique to find in the ring this day in age, but after looking at Pitalua's hair style I must say Valero's really is not that bad. Pitalua looked like one of the DeBarge brothers meets the Soul Glow guy who ran out of Soul Glow meets a coffee cake muffin top.

I was entertained and excited by Valero tonight as many others were. I would love to see him unify and face both Juan Diaz and the master counter puncher Juan Manuel Marquez.

But seeing that Texas is the only state that allows Valero to fight it looks like Valero may have found a new hometown in the lone star state. But please Valero fight on HBO not on PPV.
