Plaxico Burress Gone, Is Torry Holt the New York Giants' Next No. 1 Wideout?

Cory HolibaughApr 4, 2009

The New York Giants released wide receiver Plaxico Burress. What took them so long?

From there, there isn't much to say about Burress. He is going to court and possibly facing jail time and if not, a suspension from the NFL.

So now the Giants are out on their No. 1 wideout. They should be keeping their eyes open for a new receiver, especially with Amani Toomer gone as a free agent.

With free agency still looming, the draft around the corner, and a trade always a possibility who are the Giants options?

Here are some receivers the Giants should steer away from.

Anquan Boldin would be a great receiver in New York. The only problem is, how do the Giants get him?

He would most likely cost too much, and the Arizona Cardinals trading him would highly upset Kurt Warner. If the Giants threw down two first-rounders and maybe a third, then they would be in business.

The Giants are smarter than that. Two first-rounders is too much. Out goes Boldin...No questions asked.

Marvin Harrison is still available since the Indianapolis Colts released him, but is probably asking for too much money. He is old and the Giants don't want to over-pay a veteran that is past his prime.

Not too mention they just got rid of a receiver with gun-related issues in Burress. Harrison had his "incident" awhile back. Out goes Harrison...

There has been talk about Cleveland Browns receiver Braylon Edwards. He isn't the surest receiver but has had flashes of greatness. His 2007 season is proof to that.

Playing for a high-level team could spark his potential, bringing him back to his Pro Bowl form. But just like Boldin, the Giants would have to give up picks but not as much or as valuable.

The Giants could probably acquire Edwards for a first and third-rounder, if the Browns want to let their No. 1 receiver go.

They just recently cut Joe Jurevicious and Donte Stallworth is undoubtedly going to jail for some time. It's questionable as to whether or not Edwards is even tradable on the Browns part.

If Eric Mangini doesn't like Edwards, there could possibly be a trade in these teams futures.

Another option for the Giants is receiver Torry Holt. The St. Louis Rams cut him last month and he is looking for a job. He is old but isn't exactly passed his prime.

His numbers had a major drop-off last season but that is due to the Rams poor offense in general. The Rams were contenders in the past and Holt may still want to be a contender.

Holt joining the Giants would do both parties wonders.

So they have options in both trades and free agency, but what are the drafts wide receivers shaping up to look like?

With the 29th overall pick the Giants have, receivers Michael Crabtree and Jeremy Maclin should be way out of reach for them. Percy Harvin and Darrius Heyward-Bey should be gone by 29th as well.

If the Giants look to obtain a receiver in the first round of the draft, their options consist of a few.

Hakeem Nicks is appearing as the Giants' first-round pick in many mocks out there, so he is a strong possibility.

Kenny Brit could be the Giants next best option if Nicks is gone by their pick.

Brian Robiskie is a push for the first round but anything can happen on draft day.

Either way, it's apparent that Eli Manning will have to step up with Burress gone but do the Giants want to rely on a rookie wideout? It could lead to not so great things.

He could bust or the pressure could get to him in clutch situations. It seems as if an experienced NFL receiver is a better option for the Giants.

Domenik Hixon could step up as a great widout and Steve Smith had a good season in only four starts. Mario Manningham is an option as well.

They have plenty of young potential in their current receivers but no solid veterans. Saying the Giants want a receiver, Torry Holt is shaping up to be their best option.

Yes, he is old but isn't dead. He brings plenty to the table, both talent and experience-wise. He would fit in very nicely with the Giants.

It gives Eli a No. 1 wideout and the younger receivers a mentor.

So what are the chances that Holt is in a New York Giants uniform next season?
