Donté Stallworth Faces Jail Time, Charged With DUI Manslaughter

Michael WhooleyApr 4, 2009

Cleveland Browns' wide receiver Donté Stallworth has been charged with DUI manslaughter after striking and killing a pedestrian in Miami Beach on March 14.

Stallworth surrendered himself in court on Thursday and faces a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison if found guilty.

Stallworth, who signed a seven-year $35 million contract last offseason with the Cleveland Browns had a blood alcohol level of .126, which is well above the Florida legal limit of .08.

He was on his way home from a night of drinking at a Miami Beach hotel nightclub when he struck and killed 59-year-old Mario Reyes. Reyes, a construction crane operator, was crossing a busy causeway that connects Miami Beach and Miami, while trying to catch a bus on his way home from work.

Stallworth is a seven-year veteran out of the University of Tennessee. In addition to Cleveland, he has also played with the New England Patriots after previous stints with the New Orleans Saints and Philadelphia Eagles.

The oft-injured wide out has 296 career receptions for 4,383 yards with 32 touchdowns, and he has played all 16 games just 3 times in his seven-year career. In 2008, Stallworth played in 11 games for the Browns, in which he had 17 receptions for 170 yards with one touchdown.

Stallworth has returned to Cleveland to participate in offseason workouts with the Browns after posting a $200,000 bond, but obviously his 2009 season, as well as his playing career, are in huge jeopardy after this tragic accident.

Even if Stallworth is not convicted of manslaughter charges, he will likely face a suspension from the NFL. If he is convicted of the DUI manslaughter charges, he will face a minimum of four years in prison.

Stallworth, who because of injuries has never lived up to expectations, shouldn’t be considered more than a WR4 or WR5 from a fantasy football standpoint if he does get to play this upcoming season.

He will obviously have more on his mind than football with the death of Reyes, a pending court case, and possible jail time on his mind. Be very weary of drafting Stallworth in upcoming fantasy football drafts this summer.

The Bruno Boys' Fantasy Football Family would like to express our condolences to the family of Mario Reyes. We would also like to stress that if you partake in the drinking of alcoholic beverages, please don’t drink and drive, only bad things can come from it.
