Jay Cutler Traded To The Chicago Bears (2009 Fantasy Football Impact)

Michael WhooleyApr 2, 2009

Now that Jay Cutler has officially been traded to the Chicago Bears, I am going to give you my opinion of what this means for both teams in the realm of fantasy football.

First, let’s start with Jay Cutler and how his fantasy football projection changes.

His value will take a slight dip, but he is still a low end QB1 quarterback. The reason for this is because he doesn’t have the talent around him at the wide receiver position that he had in Denver.

In 2008 Cutler grew accustomed to having a stud in Brandon Marshall, who had 18 catches in a game this past season, plus a young up-and-comer in Eddie Royal and veteran presence in Brandon Stokley.

Now, he has to settle for the electrifying Devin Hester and...well...that’s about it.

The Bears have pass catching tight ends in Greg Olsen and Desmond Clark, but the Broncos had Daniel Graham and Tony Scheffler.

In order for Cutler to match last years totals, last year’s rookie wide-out, Earl Bennett of Vanderbilt, is going to have to step up and give him another option down the field.

Also, I think the Bears will either have to add a solid veteran, or draft an impact player in order to get Cutler’s stock up. However, with the first round pick already gone, getting an impact receiver will be tough to do.

With all that being said, he went from a pass first offense last year, with all his running backs injured, to a team who likes to use running back Matt Forte to run first, run second and then think about the pass; Forte still comes to mind as he lead the Bears in receptions last season.

In all reality, Cutler makes the Bears' offense more dynamic, but odds are against him putting up the numbers that will put your fantasy team over the top.

As for the Denver Broncos, they may have a bit of a quarterback battle going into this season.

With two first round picks I see the Broncos taking either Mark Sanchez of USC or Josh Freeman of Kansas State. Unless the team declares who the quarterback is, I think you may see a training camp battle between Chris Simms and Kyle Orton.

I think the winner of that battle is a high end number QB2 for your fantasy squad.

With all the weapons in Denver that I mentioned above, plus adding wide receivers Jabar Gaffney and Chad Jackson (2 former New England Patriots) to the mix, not to mention a slew of running backs, the ingredients are there for both QB's to succeed in fantasy football land.

People will be hesitant to grab Simms or Orton, so be sure to go out and take a chance on the starter. One of those guys could put up pretty good numbers and become a solid match-up start for your fantasy football team.
