Kentucky's Savior Has Arrived, But....is That a Good Thing?
As I saw the bottom line announce that John Calipari had agreed to become the next basketball coach at Kentucky, I heard a resounding cheer, which I can only assume was the entire state of Kentucky. I get it. He's flamboyant, slick, smooth, sweet talking, and happens to also be a great coach.
The deck is stacked in his favor. He's always been at programs where winning wasn't a prerequisite of the job. He won where it wasn't the expectation. He's had the best players show up to play at places without the name "KENTUCKY" across the chest. Now, he's got tradition and name to sell, on top of getting players to the future they want....the NBA.
And, the state of Kentucky is more accepting now than they've been in 20 years. Searching for a grain of hope for their beloved basketball team.
But, did Kentucky ask the right questions before making the hire of the century?
How does Calipari always land the players he wants year after year?
Is there something beyond the surface that we don't know about?
And, the biggest question of all, has Kentucky sold their soul in the name of winning?
I'm not here to tell you that Calipari is a cheat. I'm also not here to reduce his sales ability to paying for players.
Just wondering if Kentucky knows the answers, or if they care to know them?
Only time will tell. For now, it's absolute euphoria in the Bluegrass State.
I can hear the coronation starting now. . . .
