The Secret Behind Kevin Garnetts Knee Injury

Brandon RibakMar 31, 2009

After missing 13 straight games due to a posterior muscle strain in his right knee, Kevin Garnett returned to the court with the sounds of roars and cheers from his "dedicated" fans.

Garnett played the next four games in a row, but was limited in minutes during each game, playing no more than 18 minutes.

Just when fans thought KG was finally moving forward from his knee injury, he missed the next two games against the Atlanta Hawks and the Oklahoma City Thunder. KG was listed as a game-time decision for Friday's game (just like every game since his return from injury), as all signs pointed to him being active on the floor.

Before the start of the game, the announcers stated that Garnett would not be on the court tonight against the Atlanta Hawks, due to more soreness in his right knee.

When head coach Doc Rivers was asked about Garnett on March 27, he said, "He was just not feeling great...he needed a day off to rest...there are no plans for further tests on the knee."

Three days later, the Boston Herald reported that Doc Rivers expected Garnett to miss Wednesday nights game against the Charlotte Bobcats, with a return more likely Friday night against the Hawks. When Rivers was asked about Garnett's health concern and if it required more tests to be run, Rivers shook his head no, saying, "He'll be getting it checked all the time as he goes on, but it's just sore...We're fine with what we know."

Today, General Manager Danny Ainge reported to the Boston Herald that the organization was just being cautious with KG's injury and also disputed the notion that Garnett's condition has worsened. Ainge stated, “This isn’t a setback...Not at all.”

The Boston Herald article went on to say that the Celtics are scheduled to have their first full practice in more than a month today at the team’s Waltham facility, but Garnett is not expected to participate.

So let's get this straight. Garnett returns after 13 games. He plays four straight games with limited minutes because the team wants to be cautious with him. Garnett misses two straight games because of recurrent soreness. KG is unlikely to play in Wednesday nights game against the Bobcats. He will not participate in the Celtics' first full practice in more than a month today.

Hmm...something just does not sound right. Garnett has now not played since the loss on the 25th against the Orlando Magic, six days ago. He will not participate in the team's first full practice, and on top of that will miss Wednesday night's game, making it an entire week since Garnett's last step onto the court.

It seems like Garnett's injury has clearly not improved. He gave it a go during the four games (even with the cautious limited minutes) and ended up just adding more fuel to the fire.

It is obviously uncertain when Garnett will finally return 100 percent to the floor and begin to log starter minutes. With only seven games remaining on the Celtics season schedule, it seems like Doc Rivers and Danny Ainge continue to delay and sugarcoat the Big Ticket's return to the court.

The Celtics better hope for a speedy quick return from KG, or else they are in big trouble heading into the playoffs.

***Article Update***- KG will be shut down for the rest of the season. I knew something did not seem right...Good Luck in the Playoffs Celtics fans!
