2013 NFL Mock Draft: Buying or Selling Expert Picks

Scott CarasikJun 7, 2018

The NFL draft is just a couple months away, and experts are making their picks for whom they think the teams will select. However, with the combine, pro days and individual workouts still to come, it's hard to be accurate.

So we'll go through some of the top NFL draft analysts' mock drafts and figure out which picks make the most sense.

We'll be using mock drafts from Matt Miller of Bleacher Report, Walter Cherepinsky of Walterfootball, and Scott Wright of Draft Countdown. As we go through each selection for the different teams, we'll explore who gave the best pick based on needs, scheme and off-the-field fit.

1. Kansas City Chiefs

1 of 32

Walter Cherepinsky's Pick: QB Geno Smith, West Virginia

Matt Miller's Pick: QB Geno Smith, West Virginia

Scott Wright's Pick: QB Geno Smith, West Virginia

Buying or selling the picks

If your team needs a franchise quarterback and doesn't have one, you take one. Kansas City's biggest holes in 2012 were their head coach and quarterback. Bringing in Andy Reid as a head coach and Geno Smith as a quarterback would be the best thing that they could do. So I'm buying this pick.

Who the selection should be: QB Geno Smith, West Virginia

2. Jacksonville Jaguars

2 of 32

Walter Cherepinsky's Pick: DE Jarvis Jones, Georgia

Matt Miller's Pick: DE Bjoern Werner, Florida State

Scott Wright's Pick: DE Jarvis Jones, Georgia

Buying or selling the picks

The idea here is that once you have a quarterback, you need a good pass rush. I find it tough to disagree. I love the idea of Jarvis Jones early, but Bjoern Werner makes the most sense for the 4-3 that the Jaguars run under Mike Mularkey. I'll buy the idea of a defensive end and go with Matt Miller's pick here.

Who the selection should be: DE Bjoern Werner, Florida State

3. Oakland Raiders

3 of 32

Walter Cherepinsky's Pick: DT Star Lotulelei, Utah

Matt Miller's Pick: DT Star Lotulelei, Utah

Scott Wright's Pick: DE Bjoern Werner, Florida State

Buying or selling the picks

The Raiders have a few holes and honestly they should go with the best player available. Both Star Lotulelei and Bjoern Werner would be the best player available, and I would definitely buy either one as the pick. Considering Werner would have been selected No. 2 in this exercise, we'll go with Star here.

Who the selection should be: DT Star Lotulelei, Utah

4. Philadelphia Eagles

4 of 32

Walter Cherepinsky's Pick: OT Luke Joeckel, Texas A&M

Matt Miller's Pick: OT Luke Joeckel, Texas A&M

Scott Wright's Pick: OT Luke Joeckel, Texas A&M

Buying or selling the picks

Philadelphia has a ton of potential. However, the Eagles' offensive line was their Achilles heel in 2012. When Jason Peters and Jason Kelce went down, so did the Eagles' hopes for any sort of winning season. By bringing in the supremely talented Joeckel and getting Kelce back, the Eagles should have a great offensive line. I definitely buy this pick.

Who the selection should be: OT Luke Joeckel, Texas A&M

5. Detroit Lions

5 of 32

Walter Cherepinsky's Pick: DE/OLB Damontre Moore, Texas A&M

Matt Miller's Pick: DE/OLB Jarvis Jones, Georgia

Scott Wright's Pick: CB Dee Milliner, Alabama

Buying or selling the picks

The Lions have a tendency to go to the best player available in the front seven or offensive line for their first-round pick. This means I would have to sell the idea of both Damontre Moore and Dee Milliner, as Jarvis Jones is the best player available in the defensive front seven.

Who the selection should be: DE/OLB Jarvis Jones, Georgia

6. Cleveland Browns

6 of 32

Walter Cherepinsky's Pick: LB Manti Te'o, Notre Dame

Matt Miller's Pick: DE Damontre Moore, Texas A&M

Scott Wright's Pick: DE Sam Montgomery, LSU

Buying or selling the picks

While the idea of a right defensive end makes a ton of sense, Cleveland would be wise to bring in the best possible pass-rusher it could. At this point in the draft, I couldn't see Sam Montgomery or Manti Te'o being good picks and will sell those ideas. But I completely buy Matt Miller's idea of Damontre Moore.

Who the selection should be: DE Damontre Moore, Texas A&M

7. Arizona Cardinals

7 of 32

Walter Cherepinsky's Pick: OT Taylor Lewan, Michigan

Matt Miller's Pick: OT Jake Matthews, Texas A&M

Scott Wright's Pick: QB Matt Barkley, USC

Buying or selling the picks

Despite having some talent at quarterback in Kevin Kolb, Scott Wright thinks Matt Barkley makes sense. I will sell that idea right now. Kolb is good when he isn't sitting injured on the sideline and Barkley is a third-round talent. I'll buy the idea of taking the best left tackle available and go with Jake Matthews here.

Who the selection should be: OT Jake Matthews, Texas A&M

8. Buffalo Bills

8 of 32

Walter Cherepinsky's Pick: QB Mike Glennon, N.C. State

Matt Miller's Pick: QB Tyler Wilson, Arkansas

Scott Wright's Pick: LB Manti Te'o, Notre Dame

Buying or selling the picks

Buffalo has a very good defense talent wise. However, it does need some linebackers. With the amount of talent in this year's class, the Bills can afford to wait. Quarterback is their biggest need now, and Tyler Wilson is the pick that I would be buying if push came to shove.

Who the selection should be: QB Tyler Wilson, Arkansas

9. New York Jets

9 of 32

Walter Cherepinsky's Pick: DE Bjoern Werner, Florida State

Matt Miller's Pick: QB Mike Glennon, N.C. State

Scott Wright's Pick: DE/OLB Dion Jordan, Oregon

Buying or selling the picks

If you don't have a quarterback, it doesn't matter who your pass-rushers are. So I sell the idea of getting a pass-rusher and buy the idea of taking Mike Glennon. He's not the best quarterback in the draft, but he has a lot of talent and reminds me quite a bit of Matt Ryan.

Who the selection should be: QB Mike Glennon, N.C. State

10. Tennessee Titans

10 of 32

Walter Cherepinsky's Pick: CB Dee Milliner, Alabama

Matt Miller's Pick: CB Dee Milliner, Alabama

Scott Wright's Pick: DE DaMontre Moore, Texas A&M

Buying or selling the picks

Tennessee has some talent on its defense. But the idea of bringing in a pass-rusher would make sense—as would bringing in a guy like Dee Milliner who can play the nickel corner or start at right corner. I will be buying this pick of Milliner because DaMontre Moore has already been selected.

Who the selection should be: CB Dee Milliner, Alabama

11. San Diego Chargers

11 of 32

Walter Cherepinsky's Pick: DE/OLB Dion Jordan, Oregon

Matt Miller's Pick: OT Taylor Lewan, Michigan

Scott Wright's Pick: OT Taylor Lewan, Michigan

Buying or selling the picks

While a pass-rusher makes sense for everyone, I can't see San Diego doing that after taking Melvin Ingram last year. So I would sell the idea of Dion Jordan. However, a true left tackle is definitely needed and buying the Taylor Lewan pick only makes sense.

Who the selection should be: OT Taylor Lewan, Michigan

12. Miami Dolphins

12 of 32

Walter Cherepinsky's Pick: OT Eric Fisher, Central Michigan

Matt Miller's Pick: OG Chance Warmack, Alabama

Scott Wright's Pick: DE/OLB Barkevious Mingo, LSU

Buying or selling the picks

I'm going to sell the idea of Barkevious Mingo and Eric Fisher. Both players only make sense if Jake Long or Cameron Wake wind up not playing for Miami. However, Chance Warmack should be the pick for sure. He's a beast as a guard, and lining him up between Long and Mike Pouncey would create a very good offensive line for the Dolphins.

Who the selection should be: OG Chance Warmack, Alabama

13. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

13 of 32

Walter Cherepinsky's Pick: CB Johnthan Banks, Mississippi State

Matt Miller's Pick: CB Johnthan Banks, Mississippi State

Scott Wright's Pick: CB Johnthan Banks, Mississippi State

Buying or selling the picks

Tampa Bay had the 32nd-ranked pass defense in the NFL. Its starting corners are E.J. Biggers and Eric Wright. That probably had a lot to do with it. The Bucs need at least three talented corners this offseason, and with Johnthan Banks they can easily have their No. 1 corner. Definitely buying this pick.

Who the selection should be: CB Johnthan Banks, Mississippi State

14. Carolina Panthers

14 of 32

Walter Cherepinsky's Pick: NT Johnathan Hankins, Ohio State

Matt Miller's Pick: NT Jesse Williams, Alabama

Scott Wright's Pick: NT Star Lotulelei, Utah

Buying or selling the picks

The Panthers' biggest need since Ron Rivera showed up has been their defensive tackle spots. While he failed big with Sione Fua and Terrell McClain, it's still a good idea for them to bring in a defensive tackle. I buy any one of these three picks if they are there, but in this case Johnathan Hankins is the best available.

Who the selection should be: NT Johnathan Hankins, Ohio State

15. New Orleans Saints

15 of 32

Walter Cherepinsky's Pick: DT Sheldon Richardson, Missouri

Matt Miller's Pick: DE Dion Jordan, Oregon

Scott Wright's Pick: NT Johnathan Hankins, Ohio State

Buying or selling the picks

Despite finishing with the NFL's worst defense, there is still some hope. While I sell the idea of a defensive tackle because the Saints like the rotation of Broderick Bunkley, Akiem Hicks and Sedrick Ellis at tackle, I completely buy the idea of them taking the best available outside pass-rusher here in Dion Jordan.

Who the selection should be: DE Dion Jordan, Oregon

16. St. Louis Rams

16 of 32

Walter Cherepinsky's Pick: OG Chance Warmack, Alabama

Matt Miller's Pick: WR Keenan Allen, California

Scott Wright's Pick: OG Chance Warmack, Alabama

Buying or selling the picks

If Chance Warmack was available, I would have said buy faster than a stockbroker who sees a top stock at just a dollar. However, he's not available, so the second idea is a big-name, big-threat wide receiver in Keenan Allen. This is a pick that I also would buy. St. Louis needs a No. 1 and Allen can be that in a heartbeat.

Who the selection should be: WR Keenan Allen, California

17. Pittsburgh Steelers

17 of 32

Walter Cherepinsky's Pick: OLB Barkevious Mingo, LSU

Matt Miller's Pick: LB Manti Te'o, Notre Dame

Scott Wright's Pick: NT John Jenkins, Georgia

Buying or selling the picks

Both Barkevious Mingo and John Jenkins make a ton of sense here as the defensive front seven is the biggest need for Pittsburgh. However, Manti Te'o is just too good to fall anymore, and the need at inside linebacker next to Lawrence Timmons would be shored up with this pick.

Who the selection should be: LB Manti Te'o, Notre Dame

18. Dallas Cowboys

18 of 32

Walter Cherepinsky's Pick: DT John Jenkins, Georgia

Matt Miller's Pick: FS Kenny Vaccaro, Texas

Scott Wright's Pick: FS Kenny Vaccaro, Texas

Buying or selling the picks

Gerald Sensabaugh is an average free safety. Barry Church is an average strong safety. Nose tackle is definitely a need too, so both picks are what I would buy. However, safety looks like a bigger need than nose tackle, and this year's class at safety is not very deep. Kenny Vaccaro is the pick here.

Who the selection should be: FS Kenny Vaccaro, Texas

19. New York Giants

19 of 32

Walter Cherepinsky's Pick: DE Ezekial Ansah, BYU

Matt Miller's Pick: DT Johnathan Hankins, Ohio State

Scott Wright's Pick: DE Ezekial Ansah, BYU

Buying or selling the picks

Either spot on the defensive line would make sense for the Giants' pick. So both Johnathan Hankins and Ezekial Ansah are picks that I could buy. However, Hankins has already been selected at this point. So Ansah is the pick as a Justin Tuck clone.

Who the selection should be: DE Ezekial Ansah, BYU

20. Chicago Bears

20 of 32

Walter Cherepinsky's Pick: ILB Alec Ogletree, Georgia

Matt Miller's Pick: ILB Arthur Brown, Kansas State

Scott Wright's Pick: OT Eric Fisher, Central Michigan

Buying or selling the picks

Considering Brian Urlacher is a free agent and Lance Briggs has said that he would never play middle linebacker, picking Arthur Brown and Alec Ogletree make a ton of sense. However, the Bears offensive line has been suspect for years now and drafting a true left tackle would help it long term. I'm going to buy the pick of Eric Fisher and sell the other two.

Who the selection should be: OT Eric Fisher, Central Michigan

21. Cincinnati Bengals

21 of 32

Walter Cherepinsky's Pick: DE Sam Montgomery, LSU

Matt Miller's Pick: DT Sheldon Richardson, Missouri

Scott Wright's Pick: ILB Alec Ogletree, Georgia

Buying or selling the picks

With how deep the Cincinnati line is, I have a hard time buying either of the defensive line picks. So in selling those, the biggest need looks to be inside linebacker. Alec Ogletree is the pick I buy here as he fits Mike Zimmer's defense much better than Arthur Brown does.

Who the selection should be: ILB Alec Ogletree, Georgia

22. St. Louis Rams (From Washington Redskins)

22 of 32

Walter Cherepinsky's Pick: S Kenny Vaccaro, Texas

Matt Miller's Pick: OL Dallas Thomas, Tennessee

Scott Wright's Pick: OT Jake Matthews, Texas A&M

Buying or selling the picks

With Jake Matthews and Kenny Vaccaro already taken, Dallas Thomas looks like the pick that should be taken by default. Unfortunately, I'll be selling that pick as well as I don't find Thomas to be more impressive than Alabama offensive lineman Barrett Jones.

Jones could jump right in at any of the five spots on the offensive line. And with Harvey Dahl, Scott Wells and Roger Saffold looking solid, Jones helps give the Rams four good offensive linemen.

Who the selection should be: OL Barrett Jones, Alabama

23. Baltimore Ravens

23 of 32

Walter Cherepinsky's Pick: WR Cordarrelle Patterson, Tennessee

Matt Miller's Pick: S Eric Reid, LSU

Scott Wright's Pick: S Eric Reid, LSU

Buying or selling the picks

Eric Reid is the pick that is easiest to buy here. I love how Cordarrelle Patterson plays and think when all is said and done, he could be the top receiver off of the board. I just think this would be a bad fit for him as the Ravens need someone who can take over for Ed Reed.

Who the selection should be: S Eric Reid, LSU

24. Minnesota Vikings

24 of 32

Walter Cherepinsky's Pick: DT Bennie Logan, LSU

Matt Miller's Pick: DT John Jenkins, Georgia

Scott Wright's Pick: WR Keenan Allen, California

Buying or selling the picks

With Keenan Allen off of the board already and Bennie Logan looking like a reach at this point, John Jenkins looks like the pick by default. He's an easy one to buy though as the Vikings need someone who can force double-teams on the inside and take pressure off of Kevin Williams.

Who the selection should be: DT John Jenkins, Georgia

25. Indianapolis Colts

25 of 32

Walter Cherepinsky's Pick: NT Jesse Williams, Alabama

Matt Miller's Pick: OLB Adrian Hubbard, Alabama

Scott Wright's Pick: OL Jonathan Cooper, North Carolina

Buying or selling the picks

These three picks all make sense and are all ones that I would buy. However, when it comes to the biggest need on the Indianapolis defense right now, I have to go with Jesse Williams. He can play the nose or the 5-technique. It wouldn't surprise me to see him as the pick despite Josh Chapman already in the middle of that defense.

Who the selection should be: NT Jesse Williams, Alabama

26. Seattle Seahawks

26 of 32

Walter Cherepinsky's Pick: WR Terrance Williams, Baylor

Matt Miller's Pick: WR Terrance Williams, Baylor

Scott Wright's Pick: DT Sheldon Richardson, Missouri

Buying or selling the picks

While Sheldon Richardson is a personal favorite of mine, it's tough to not buy the idea of Terrance Williams wearing a Seahawks jersey in 2013. He's a perfect fit for the offense they run there and would be a good fit as a No. 1 option with Sidney Rice and Golden Tate there as secondary options.

Who the selection should be: WR Terrance Williams, Baylor

27. Green Bay Packers

27 of 32

Walter Cherepinsky's Pick: WR Keenan Allen, California

Matt Miller's Pick: OL Barrett Jones, Alabama

Scott Wright's Pick: TE Tyler Eifert, Notre Dame

Buying or selling the picks

I'm going to have to sell both the idea of Keenan Allen and Tyler Eifert right now. Jermichael Finley has posted a great second half of the season and I don't see wide receiver as a need in Green Bay. With Barrett Jones off the board at this point, I have to sell all three picks. Jonathan Cooper is the pick here.

Who the selection should be: OG Jonathan Cooper, North Carolina

28. Houston Texans

28 of 32

Walter Cherepinsky's Pick: ILB Kevin Minter, LSU

Matt Miller's Pick: ILB Alec Ogletree, Georgia

Scott Wright's Pick: NT Jesse Williams, Alabama

Buying or selling the picks

The idea of a nose tackle would make more sense if Wade Phillips required a top-notch one. So I'd sell the Jesse Williams pick from the get-go. However, an inside linebacker is definitely needed. I just don't think Kevin Minter is the right fit and Alec Ogletree is unavailable. So I'd sell all three picks. Arthur Brown is the pick that I would take here.

Who the selection should be: ILB Arthur Brown, Kansas State

29. San Francisco 49ers

29 of 32

Walter Cherepinsky's Pick: S Matt Elam, Florida

Matt Miller's Pick: CB Jordan Poyer, Oregon State

Scott Wright's Pick: DL Sylvester Williams, North Carolina

Buying or selling the picks

Call me a bit of a purist, but when you have one of the best defenses in the NFL, I'm going to sell any defensive pick made. The biggest problem on the 49ers is offensively. It's at wide receiver where there is a complete void of talent. Especially with last year's first-round pick. So I have them taking a true No. 1 and a Julio Jones clone here in Cordarrelle Patterson.

Who the selection should be: WR Cordarrelle Patterson, Tennessee

30. New England Patriots

30 of 32

Walter Cherepinsky's Pick: WR Tavon Austin, West Virginia

Matt Miller's Pick: CB Xavier Rhodes, Florida State

Scott Wright's Pick: CB David Amerson, N.C. State

Buying or selling the picks

I don't see Tavon Austin as a need for the Patriots or David Amerson as worth the value, so I sell both of those picks. However, Xavier Rhodes is more than worth it here and would easily fit one of New England's biggest needs at corner.

Who the selection should be: CB Xavier Rhodes, Florida State

31. Atlanta Falcons

31 of 32

Walter Cherepinsky's Pick: TE Tyler Eifert, Notre Dame

Matt Miller's Pick: DE Barkevious Mingo, LSU

Scott Wright's Pick: TE Zach Ertz, Stanford

Buying or selling the picks

Barkevious Mingo isn't someone who truly fits the character profile of Atlanta's players. Zach Ertz is also someone who just isn't worth the value in the first round. The best possible pick here is Tyler Eifert. He's the top-rated tight end in the draft and would fit right into the culture in Atlanta. I sell the Mingo and Ertz picks but buy the Eifert one all day.

Who the selection should be: TE Tyler Eifert, Notre Dame

32. Denver Broncos

32 of 32

Walter Cherepinsky's Pick: OG/C Jonathan Cooper, North Carolina

Matt Miller's Pick: DT Sharrif Floyd, Florida

Scott Wright's Pick: DT Kawann Short, Purdue

Buying or selling the picks

While the idea of a top-rated guard or defensive tackle is very easy to buy. The question of who the best pick would be is tougher. However, Sharrif Floyd makes the most sense of the three picks shown and would be an excellent fit next to Elvis Dumervil or Derek Wolfe.

Who the selection should be: DT Sharrif Floyd, Florida
