MMA Topics That Concern Grandma
People who have followed my career know that I have favorite fighters and MMA themes.
Being accused of being biased is nothing new to me.
Before I came to be a blog writer I also had ideas which made me unpopular.
As a patient advocate I triedto report a nurses' aid for restraining an elderly male patient in a chair then verbally harassing and taunting him. Of all things my instructor told me that as a guest there, it would be "impolite" to report such abuse. If the elderly gentleman's family had witnessed it and reported it, would that be impolite?
When I was a nurse on an Adolescent Psych Unit, I was often berated for taking a patient's side and refusing to back down in spite of ridicule and peer pressure to cave in to "popular opinion." My point was that "all" patients have rights regardless of their age and diagnosis.
I do not choose the easy road, I choose to stand up for my principles.
Because of my principles I have an opinion on how a young woman like Gina Carano, who has somewhat unwillingly assumed the role of the "face" of women in MMA, should be treated. I am currently livid about an interview that was videotaped recently with a male interviewer.
Gina is serious about her fighting in MMA. Why is she being treated as a dumb chick who is a man magnet?
What business was it of her interviewer to ask her if the denim mini skirt she was wearing was the one she was wearing when someone took her picture while she was "doing the worm?"
So she went to a party, drank with some friends and did something spontaneous and amusing. What does that have to do with her fighting ability?
Shouldn't someone who is representing an MMA site have more pertinent issues to inquire about?
What about finding out her other favorite sports activities; the athletes she admired as she was growing up, those who impacted her decision to become a fighter?
Learn some facts about her life that young girls would enjoy knowing about; do we really need to know if all the men slobbering over her and making suggestive remarks about her should ask her for a date?
Clean it up buddy and focus on the subject at hand and not your own bedtime fantasies. Please treat her with the respect a serious athlete deserves and help elevate the sport of MMA above a caveman's reality. Please.
Hearing about the interaction between Frank Shamrock and Nick Diaz has greatly disturbed me, while we are talking about granny's concerns.
Now, I enjoy watching the Diaz brothers fight, I like that they are free spirits, but I have seen more than enough of their middle fingers for one life time.
So when I heard that as Frank Shamrock offered his hand after the introduction for their fight, Nick offered Frank his middle finger, I was wishing that Frank had reached out and snapped it off.
What if the fight did have to be called off, it would have served as a lesson in manners and respect which I find very scarce in youth currently. That lesson, for me and many parents, teachers and law enforcement officers would be worth the loss of a weekend's entertainment. What is with kids these days"
Now if I was in a musical, I would break out into the song "Kids" from "Bye Bye Birdie" at this point.
Frank Shamrock was on his best behavior and even thanked Cung Le for breaking his arm in their fight because his recuperation was spent getting to know his new baby daughter. Of course babies are another of granny's favorites, as well as doting fathers.
On April 1, I will not be joking at all when I say that I am praying for Shamrock to win.
"Sorry," to my friend Yoli and all the others in the ProElite Diaz Brother Fan Club, guess I have betrayed you guys. Damn my principles, anyway!
Speaking of Shamrocks, I was not as surprised about the steroids that Ken was taking because, after all, Frank had already stated that his brother had done steroids in the past.
What made me happy was that this came out before his match with Bobby Lashley.
While I do not believe Ken would have won, I was afraid that an incident could happen that would hurt the sport or reflect badly on Bobby who has a budding career in the sport
In fact I saw a Google alert that mentioned that Bobby is currently talking with the UFC. Although I haven't read the article yet (it was time for dinner), I hope that it is an indication than another wish will come true for me.
After learning that Lyoto Machida's secret weapon includes drinking his own urine I am hoping that Shogun Rua is also in on this secret so he can help put an end to the Iceman's long reign.
In his last fight Chuck's abdomen was protruding and heaving so much that I was in fear of witnessing an embarrassing eruption of some sort, or at least a humongous Clay Guida style burp.
One of my latest detractors felt I was insensitive to call this a "beer belly," but since in the autobiography "The Iceman," there is a detailed history of Liddell's night clubbing and drinking, I think my description is dead on accurate.
After years of alternately abusing and then training his body to attempt to regain his fighting supremacy, I really doubt a rebirth is in the future for Chuck.
In my opinion, Randy Couture is still the best hero for the oldsters like me who relive our past glory days through "Captain America." He is still the man, as far as I am concerned.
Georges St-Pierre is doing wonders for making MMA relevant and bringing the sport into the mainstream with appearances in movies and commercial endorsements. Yet another coup is signing a deal to do a TV program on a Canadian Broadcasting company. His manager has not released the details yet but promises that they will be released "soon."
Already Georges' many female fans are clamoring for more details and snippets of information, especially whether American fans will be able to see it.
Much more news is coming out about the at first controversial Montreal event, UFC 97 which has almost all of my favorite Canadian fighters on the roster. I will wait a little longer to write about that one.
Thanks for visiting at Grandma Dee's home, hope to see you again soon.
