49ers Should Bring Tony Gonzalez Home

Steven ResnickMar 24, 2009

According to reports Tony Gonzalez would like to be traded. He isn't actually demanding a trade, but the Chiefs are hoping for a good enough offer if the Chiefs don't find a suitable offer then Gonzalez will more than likely stay a Chief until he plans on retiring in the next year or two.

The 49ers should step on board and try to bring in the 10-time Pro-Bowler. For one he would be able to mentor Vernon Davis on how to become an even more potent weapon in the offense.

Gonzalez has already proved that he is still capable of getting the job done. Last year he caught 96 passes for 1058 yards and 10 touchdowns. Which, those numbers would have made him the number one receiver for the 49ers.

Probably one of the more important reasons though is that it would be bringing him home where he first got started, which was in the Bay Area. He went to the University of California and played both football and basketball.

The 49ers need to find a way to make a trade and bring in a solid veteran presence to their tight end core. The 49ers could either offer Billy Bajema and a third round pick or maybe Delanie Walker instead due to the fact he has excellent speed for a tight end and, at 24, could be a nice option for the Chiefs and again offering a third round pick.

In fact the 49ers should try to do anything in their power to get Gonzalez.

Partly because he would upgrade the tight end position, but if Isaac Bruce retires the 49ers do not have a veteran pass catcher on the team except for Brandon Jones who has never been a number on receiver in the NFL.

Gonzalez is an excellent fit for the 49ers and he would definitely improve the passing game and as well make Frank Gore that much more dangerous!
