Cleveland Browns' Future Quarterback Situation

john bakerMar 24, 2009

The Cleveland Browns management, head coach, Eric Mangini, and general manager, George Kokinis, told the press today that they are "open" to quarterback competition.

The first problem is, Cleveland Browns fans have been hurting this team for a long time and "ManKok" will have the responsibility of ignoring them and their quarterback demands. Honestly, fans do not have a clue what happens behind closed doors, or in the huddle, because they are not there.

Cleveland fans have been choosing QB's for 20 years. Whether it was booing the release of old quarterback, Bernie Kosar, for the youthful Vinny Testaverde, or the choice between "Big Game" Kelly Holcomb, who put up big numbers but failed to win games, over Tim Couch, who loved his team so much he teared up in his locker when he could help.

That kind of devotion reminds me of Brett Farve, real men do cry, when they care enough about something.

This brings us to the fan's favorite, Brady Quinn.

After failing to be drafted in the first 20 picks of the 2007 NFL draft, fans should have realized that scouts saw nothing in him that would make him a top 20 pick.

First off, he had a lack of arm strength, which was clearly demonstrated this year as Quinn threw most of his passes to the flats. Brady's lack of "big arm" throws can prevent an offense from stretching the field, and moves defensive safeties into the box, hurting the running game. Just ask Jamal Lewis.

Secondly, he is 6'2", and by NFL standards that is short. His height can definitely hinder a quarterback when it comes to seeing the entire field.

Derek Anderson, on the other hand, while being inaccurate at times and displaying problems with the "touch" pass, shows big arm capabilities and has the ability to stretch the field and win games with his arm.

If it was not for dropped passes, the Browns would not have even worried about Brady Quinn in 2008, as they would have easily won two more games on the arm of Anderson.

The Cleveland Browns fans need to forget about what they want and let "ManKok" make the decisions they were hired to make.

Please stop booing your quarterbacks, have some faith in the hired help, and understand that Mangini and Kokinis are paid a ton of money because they know what they are doing

Trade Braylon Edwards and Brady Quinn, and draft Michael Crabtree, Donald Brown, and a defensive tackle, and lets get ready for 09'.
