Top 10 "Dark Horse" Pitchers Of 2009

Ray TannockMar 24, 2009

In my third and final installment, we will take a look at the best of the best the entire league has to offer fantasy managers that are looking for that one guy that could make a real unexpected impact. Elite starters aside, we'll find a nice blend of youth and experience and some names that, hopefully, won't be overlooked.

The thoughts every manager has after draft day are filled with claiming overlooked and non-players to replace the players you really don't see giving back. From a pitching standpoint, most of these names should be found somewhere between Dropsville and Waivertown, so keep your eyes peeled.

Unlike scanning an individual conference, scanning the entire league can prove to be a daunting challenge. We tend to forget past accomplishments, we tend to cast aside second year guys who weren't on the elite radar, and we almost always shy away from guys returning from injury. All are mistakes that prove to be costly in the long run. Hopefully, within this list, you'll find that "diamond in the rough!"

Saddle up everyone!

10. Jeff Samardzija

Gone, are his TD catching days, but in time, Samardzija has the potential to become one of the best. His fastball has developed nicely, but he still needs work on that slider and change-up. Put him on your watch list early and monitor his progress. When the time is right, pick him up if he's still available and enjoy the ride.

9. Nick Blackburn

Blackburn produced last year despite his 11-11 record and now with another year under his belt and a better supporting cast around him, this year should be much better. His heater suffered last year due to little velocity, but made up for it in his curveball. He should have made a world of improvements this year. Blackburn could be a nice early guy to use if your staff is a little weak.

8. Armando Galarrgara

Galarragara boasted 126 SO and a 13-7 record last year and out of every available pitcher in D-Town, looks to be the most dependable. The only thing with Detroit, is the uncertainty of the pitching staff, so keep a close eye on him if you have him. In my opinion, he's the best option.

7. Johnny Cueto

The theme for the Red's pitchers is: CONTROL. CONTROL. CONTROL. If they gain some, the entire Central division will feel the ripple effect. By the end of last year, Cueto seemed to cool off, as most rookies do, but let's not forget, this guy struck out 10 straight batters in his Major League debut (in the rain mind you). He also went on to be a SO machine. This will continue in 2009, with more wins to show for as well.

6. Manny Parra

Capuano and Gallardo are dealing with injuries, which leaves all eyes of Parra. Last year, Parra struggled towards the end, but really was a victim to fatigue. Despite that, he still managed 147 SO and only gave up 18 HRs, making him a fine choice if he's out there.

5. John Danks

In 2007, Danks suffered through a 6-13 record and a dismal 5.50 ERA with only 109 SO.

IN 2008, Danks enjoyed a modest 12-9 record with a nicely improved 3.32 ERA and a compliment of 159 SO.

Call me crazy, but all things point upward for the guy and if there is a not-so-pretty roster spot your looking to replace, this guy could be your answer.

4. Justin Duchscherer

Career wise with the A's, "Duke" has posted a nice 22-16 record and struck out 95 last year, making it a personal Athletic best (pun not intended). The A's really don't have a whole lot of lookers, making Duke a good pickup early on.

3. Chris Volstad

Remember this guy? You should. 76 hits 52 SO and a paltry three homeruns finishing at 6-4, not to mention he is a huge mound presence. Figure Volstad to be No. 3 or No. 4 in the Marlin's rotation and a guy you can count on for consistent output.

2. Francisco Liriano

What does 211 SO and 163 hits in two years get you? A great ratio, that's what! Last year, Liriano had to adjust to coming off of surgery and find his way through some improvements in his mechanics, so it is safe to say he could return to his pursuit of greatness. Considering he managed a 6-4 season last year, it is a safe bet to keep him if you have him. If your a gambling manager, use him as trade bait if another enticing offer comes your way.

1. Brad Penny

The Red Sox like big pitchers and boy howdy do they have another. Everyone seems to be in agreement that Boston took a huge risk with Penny, while I say kudos! Last year is behind Penny, and the Red Sox have acquired themselves a genuine workhorse. In four years, this guy has pitched in 114 games with literally no homeruns given up and is a strikeout factory; it's all he seems to throw. You can't forget his success in Dodgerland, but you can forget last year... go ahead it's OK.

Well there you go everyone, 10 pitchers for you to consider as we approach opening day. I hope everyone has enjoyed, and as always, comments are appreciated.

Happy reading!
