Roy Jones Jr.'s "March Badness": A Heavenly Event

Dorothy WillisMar 21, 2009

Having passed on beyond this mortal pall, I can now indulge in many guilty pleasures.

So, my voice is coming to you from beyond, as it were, and of course it concerns, as usual, MMA.

How thrilling to look down on a new production that offered the comfort of seeing my favorite earthly pastime! MMA, just mixed with boxing this time.

And to think that until tonight I never even knew who Roy Jones Jr. was!

For the record, I wasn't watching to see Roy, but oh my! He was most impressive and I now see why Anderson Silva is so awed by the man.

His boxing has the finesse that Georges St-Pierre's MMA skills have. It is like watching a perfectly choreographed, graceful yet brutal dance. Very impressive and moving at the same time.

If only my husband had been here to watch it with me!

Watching Bobby Lashley made me rue the fact that Dana White has to be so stubborn and closed-minded about letting him into the UFC.

I loved hearing Lashley, a well spoken gentleman, commenting after his fight. He did nothing like his ex-WWE counterpart, Brock Lesnar, to diminish or demean his vanquished opponent Jason Guida.

How refreshing that was! No whoops, cowboy yells, or melodrama played out after his victory, just compliments to Guida's gallant effort to defeat him.

I had no idea that Jason had fought so many times.

He did offer a challenge and attempted a guillotine on Bobby that might have undone a lesser man. But of course, Bobby is not at all ordinary and has a neck like an oak tree and probably felt like trying to choke one out...impossible.

Jason looked for submissions and one could almost see his thought process as his brain leaped from one possibility to another.

Bobby, for a beginner, showed a lot more poise than White's prize bull, Lesnar, in going the distance in fine condition for a man his size. He also showed the speed and wrestling skills he is noted for, in spite of it being only his second outing.

In the UFC, he would be up to challenge the Heavyweight champion with two wins under his belt. He showed both stamina and great promise. Too bad Dana won't risk his million dollar baby by bringing Bobby into the fold!

And OMG, Dennis Hallman!

Where has this powerful and great-looking hunk been hiding?

Did he melt any other hearts like he did mine?

Whew, it isn't supposed to get so hot up here.

Hallman is a real submission technician! What a great piece of machinery this fellow is!

Was it because Matt Hughes had been the WW champion for so long that has kept Hallman from fighting in the UFC? More Dana protecting his assets?

Naturally, I want to see a lot more of Dennis too. He and Bobby are my newest favorite fighters.

Din Thomas had a great performance and had no difficulty with his old leg injury, which I took as a positive sign that he will be fighting again soon.

So for me at least, this was an event fit for heaven and was quite a treat indeed.

Hope old Dana is really feeling the heat!
