Cleveland Browns Shouldn't Draft Receiver in Second Round
Heading into the 2009 NFL Draft, the Cleveland Browns have two second-round selections (36 and 50). The Browns have many needs and could address some of those needs with the picks. One of their needs is a receiver.
Here is a list of wide receivers the Browns could draft in the second round:

Projecting Every NFL Team's Starting Lineup 🔮

Rookie WRs Who Will Outplay Their Draft Value 📈
His size of 6'3" and 218 pounds with his 40 of 4.48 is very impressive. He may not be around by the Browns' pick.
Hakeem Nicks, North Carolina
He runs good routes, but needs to work on his blocking skills.
Brian Robiskie, Ohio State
He is a basic possession receiver with good hands, but needs to work on his separation skills.
Derrick Williams, Penn State
He is very quick on his feet and puts forth a good effort, but needs to work on consistency.
Juaquin Iglesias, Oklahoma
Very elusive after the catch, but once he is hit the play is over. Needs to work on separation.
There are plenty of other wide receiver options here. So with the release of Joe Jurevicious and Donte Stallworth's recent legal issue, a receiver would make a lot of sense right? WRONG!
Here is a list of the receivers the Browns have taken in the second round since their return to the NFL:
Kevin Johnson (1999 Draft)
Although he caught the first touchdown of the new Cleveland Browns, he wasn't the greatest receiver. He was good, but only had one season where he went for over 1,000 yards. He was cut by the Browns in the midseason in 2003 and is currently a free agent.
Dennis Northcutt (2000 Draft)
He was a good punt returner and receiver, but didn't live up to his full potential. He never had a 1,000-yard receiving year. Northcutt left the Browns via free agency after the 2006 season and signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He is currently still on the team.
Quincy Morgan (2001 Draft)
Another receiver that never lived up to his potential, Morgan had one good year with the Browns in 2002. He left the team after the 2004 season for the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was released by the Denver Broncos in 2007 and hasn't been on a team since.
Andre Davis (2002 Draft)
The receiver, not the linebacker; he never had a season where he received more than 600 yards. He left the Browns after the 2004 season and signed with the New England Patriots. Davis is currently a member of the Houston Texans.
The Browns should concentrate more on defense than anything. Here is yet another list, this one of the Cleveland Browns' recent second round defensive picks:
ILB Chaun Thompson (2003 Draft)
Thompson was never really a starter-caliber player but added good depth to the team. He left the team for the Houston Texans.
SS Sean Jones (2004 Draft)
Jones didn't play in his first season, but has been a very consistent starter since then. In four seasons, he recorded 286 tackles and 14 interceptions. He just recently signed a one-year contract with the Philadelphia Eagles.
FS Brodney Pool (2005 Draft)
Pool is nothing too special, but he is consistent. He has started for the Browns since the middle of the 2006 season. His numbers have gotten better with every season.
ILB D'Qwell Jackson (2006 Draft)
Jackson has been a starter opposite Andre Davis (the linebacker) since he was drafted. He has recorded 348 tackles in his three seasons and led the NFL in tackles with 154 last season. He isn't a pass-rusher but is a one hell of a linebacker.
CB Eric Wright (2007 Draft)
Wright was thrust into a starting role right off the bat. He isn't the greatest corner, but he is young. A good corps of linebackers would help his numbers.
His early career is marked by his 94-yard interception return for a touchdown against the Super Bowl-reigning champion New York Giants (week six of the 2008 season).
The Browns have had success with recent second round defensive picks. There are plenty of safeties, linebackers, and defensive linemen that they could choose from in the second round.
But since it's looking as if the Browns will draft OLB Brian Orakpo with their first pick, they could swing an offensive pick in the second round—maybe a running back or offensive lineman?
Running backs Donald Brown, LeSean McCoy, or Shonn Greene would fit nicely. Offensive linemen Alex Mack, William Beatty, or Phil Loadholt would also benefit the Browns.
Either way, it looks as if the Browns should not draft a wide receiver in the second round. Another bust is not something the Browns or "Mankok" need right now.
