Australia Struggle On Day Two As South Africa Look for a Consolation Win

Dann KhanMar 20, 2009

After an exhausting day of test cricket for both the Aussies and the Proteas, it is the Proteas who have taken all the advantage

Currently with seven wickets remaining and a lead of nearly 200, the Proteas hold not only the aces but also the the kings, queens, and jacks.

It seems history is going to repeat itself. Just the way the Baggy green wearers got a consolation win in Sydney after losing the series, SA seems set to do a repeat in Cape Town.

The day started with the Proteas being 57/0 but they soon lost the wicket of Imran Khan the debutant opener. In came Hashim Amla and then another partnership was strung.

Amla finally lost his concentration and got out on 46. The came Jaques Kallis who was welcomed by a barrage of bouncers from Mitchell Johnson.

Ashwell Prince on the other hand continued from where he left and kept attacking.

Then came Bryce McGain who allowed Kallis freebies which got him on the aggressive and set. Throughout his spell and his next spell the leggie was smacked all round the par and was blooding runs at almost 10 an over

The pair added 160 before Prince got out on exactly 150.

From there on Ab De Villiers and Kallis started to really take the attack to the world champions and added another 82 with Kallis reaching his test century. His first in 11 months and 31st overall

Ricky Ponting with his hands on his hips or trying to calm the bowler was a regular sight today.

It just goes on to show that the Aussies have lost the killer instinct of the old which often helped them maintain the same intensity during dead rubbers as in must win matches.

I am sure you have realised that most of the bowling was unlike Australia.

But in all this there was Peter Siddle the lone ranger. He was very tight and probed on the of stump line all day but for no success. His spell was quite brilliant. Though not the most lethal but quite lethal.

Now after a great day for South Africa all we can hope for is a good third day performance with the ball after the team declares so that they can completely shut out the opposition.
