Minnesota Vikings Seven Round Mock Draft, Updated 3/18
It's been awhile since I've posted a Minnesota Vikings mock draft. I was waiting for them to make some free-agency moves... They did not happen.
With the fact that the team has hardly changed besides Matt Birk's departure, will the picks remain the same as last time? A few will, and a few won't.
These picks are based on the Vikings biggest needs and best player available to suit that need. Please enjoy!
Round One: Percy Harvin, Wide Receiver, Florida
This pick has not changed for me in quite some time. I still feel that the need for another receiver is huge. The Vikings also lack a strong kick returner, and Percy Harvin had several kick and punt return touchdowns in his college career.
He's a heck of an athlete who, at times, played at running back for the college football champion Florida Gators.
He's quick and can burn defenders within a matter of seconds. If Minnesota wants to improve next year, they must select Percy in the first round.
Round Two: Alphonso Smith, Cornerback, Wake Forest
Like the previous pick, this one stays the same as well. The Vikings signed Karl Paymah for depth, but can he be a true factor on the defense?
Cedric Griffin had a much better season compared to 2007. Many believe still that he's very inconsistent and gets burned often.
Cedric Griffin could also play some time at safety if needed. The same for goes Alphonso.
Round Three: Antoine Caldwell, Center, Alabama
The Vikings lost center Matt Birk to the Ravens this offseason. In Birk, Minnesota lost a true veteran who spent all of his career with the Vikings.
How will he be replaced? Some believe John Sullivan, a sixth-round pick in 2008, will be the guy. Others believe it will be former college center Ryan Cook.
In my opinion, the Vikings need to draft a center fairly early. Antoine Caldwell is one of the better center prospects in this year's draft.
Round Five: Louis Ellis, Nose Tackle, Shaw
There is no denying that "Fat" Pat Williams is near the end of his career. He is a brick wall to running backs and offensive linemen. He will be tough to replace when he's gone.
Louis Ellis 6'2", 312 pound run-stuffer from Shaw University. He's not known by many people due to the fact that he goes to a small-name college.
The Vikings drafted Letroy Guion last year, but he's still a project in the mean time.
Round 7a: Mortty Ivy, Outside Linebacker, West Virginia
The Vikings have great starting linebackers, but the depth is something that concerns me.
Minnesota brought back Heath Farwell which was a very good choice. Napoleon Harris is also a very good backup linebacker. Who else is there though? Nobody that is of great importance.
Mortty Ivy is 6'2", 237 pounds, and can be a potential steal this late in the draft. He could have an impact like Chris Horton did for the Redskins.
Round 7b: Travis McCall, Fullback, Alabama
I could see Minnesota doing this for a few reasons. The first reason is because he's from Alabama just like Antoine Caldwell is. The second reason is because he's over 270 pounds, and when the Vikings have a good blocking fullback, their running game is tremendous.
I have never heard of the kid, but he sounds like one heck of a player. He wouldn't be used much on the ground, but mainly as a blocker for Adrian Peterson and Chester Taylor.
