Monte Poole: Please Tell Golden State Warriors Fans Something We Don't Know
Monte Poole recently wrote an article titled "Warriors Internal Strife Leads To Chaos, Collapse" My only question to Monte Poole is this. Do you really think that Warriors fans couldn't figured this out on their own?
First Poole uses the example of the contract that Chris Mullin worked so hard to get Baron Davis and his agent to agree to. The three year contract extension for 39 million dollars. Poole then sites the information already known about Robert Rowell using his power to negate the contract for Davis.
After knowing that Davis was no longer coming back to the Warriors. There were two other players the Warriors made a run at. Elton Brand and Gilbert Arenas.
Now Brand was fully healed from a horrible injury suffered the season before last. Brand came back for the final eight games in which Brand averaged 17.6 points per game, eight rebounds, and 1.9 blocks per game.
Brand before the injury never missed more than 20 games in a season. So, Brand could be considered not as risky as keeping Davis around due to Davis's history of injuries. In the end the Warriors run at Brand didn't happen and he ended up in Philadelphia.
The next player the Warriors who would have been taking the same risk as Davis was going after Gilbert Arenas. Arenas is three years younger than Davis so it's understandable that the contract the Warriors were offering was longer than Davis's and had more money.
Again another wasted effort by the Warriors and Arenas resigned with the Wizards for 111 million dollars. It turned out to be great news for the Warriors because Arenas hasn't played a game this year after undergoing knee surgery.
The second point to Poole's article is that Mullin has no power within the organization and is gone when his contract ends. The firing of Mullin's right hand man a week into the season already showed that and bringing in Larry Riley, Don Nelson's right hand man definitely was the final blow that ended Mullin's reign as GM of the Warriors.
Hence the reason why Stephen Jackson went to Rowell for the contract extension. The players on the team are not dumb and they realized that Mullin held no authority anymore.
The third point again another example that is getting old is Don Nelson telling Jamal Crawford needs to opt out of his contract or he'll be traded. It's easy to believe that Rowell requested Nelson to tell Crawford that.
It's also understandable on why Crawford should be gone from the Warriors. Yes, Crawford can score the basketball there's no denying that. Beyond his scoring ability what else does Crawford offer? He's a liability on defense, he takes questionable shots, and he's the definition of a streaky shooter.
The other example of this was that is also getting old is the situation with Al Harrington. Al may have been the best option at power forward for the Warriors in terms of style of play, but his actual game when he was with the Warriors was bad.
Yes, Harrington has never been a solid rebounder. The problem wasn't with that though it was Harrington's lack of mobility while playing defense that caused him to get into early foul trouble. It was also the questionable shot selection by Harrington that drew the ire of Nelson as well.
In fact it's a definite good thing that Harrington is gone now. The Warriors should have gotten a big man instead of Crawford, but it also has allowed the progress of Anthony Randolph.
Yes, Randolph and Nelson did get off to a bad start and in fact drew the ire of some of the veterans. That though was the turning point because Ronny Turiaf and Stephen Jackson took Randolph as a project and mentored him.
Randolph has come a long ways this season so much so he may even crack the starting lineup. Randolph has also impressed opposing players like Lamar Odom.
Marcus Williams didn't pan out in Nellie's system. Maybe Williams didn't get a fair shake by Nelson or maybe it's the fact that Williams is designed for more of the half court game not an up and down style.
If Williams was such a quality backup point guard/spot starter in case of injuries why has no other team come calling since he was released?
As for Chris Cohan and Rowell's people skills being questioned. Warriors fans already know that Cohan and Rowell have no idea how to run a NBA team. So, Monte Poole is this really something new?
Poole mentions the games missed by Ellis as another disaster to the season and another point of other league executives, coaches, players, and agents is about the direction of the team.
There were supposedly nearly a dozen of those interviews conducted by Poole. An executive is quoted as saying this ""There is no long-term plan."
In another quote an agent stated this "There is no plan, period, they act like there is and they say there is, but there isn't."
Since Monte interviewed the almost dozen agents, coaches, players, and executives where is the information to support the claims that there is not a plan? Just because they were quoted doesn't mean that this is necessarily the case.
As for the reason to why Chris Mullin doesn't really say much anymore is due to the fact he's gone at the end of the season. The second part to that his power over the franchise was stolen by Rowell. So, what's the point of Mullin talking?
The Warriors have the talent to produce wins maybe not this year, but next season they do. The team also knows its needs and that is a solid rebounder at the four, whether it's with the emergence of Brandan Wright and Anthony Randolph, the draft, or a free agent.
Another thing the Warriors need to do is to get rid of some of the wing players that they have a plethora of. The only players that should not be traded are Jackson, Corey Maggette, Monta Ellis, Kelenna Azubuike, and Anthony Morrow.
Lastly, the Warriors need to look at drafting a point guard or trading for one. If this happens the Warriors are young, talented, and could easily make a playoff run.
