Dallas Cowboys Inquiring About Pacman Jones

Michael FitzpatrickMar 20, 2008

Rumors have begun to surface that Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys could be interested in acquiring Pacman Jones through a trade with the Tennessee Titans.

Sources say that a trade for Jones could revolve around one of the Cowboys late-round draft picks.

There is no question about Pacman Jones' physical ability on the field. Jones was, and still has the potential to be one of the most exciting cornerbacks in the league.

Jones is also a highly explosive kick returner, averaging 12.9 yards per return with three touchdowns in 2006.

There is also no question about Jones' off-the-field exploits over the past two years—which have led to a year-long suspension under the NFL's personal conduct policy.

Jones seems to be addicted to off-the-field trouble. Amongst other offenses, in 2007, Las Vegas police seized over $81,000 from Jones, which was reportedly the cause of a fight that broke out at a Vegas strip club in which three people were shot.

In 2008, Jones was accused of assaulting a woman at a strip club, this time in Atlanta.

Jones has shown no signs, or interest, for that matter, in cleaning up his act off the field. But that is not to say that he can't.

Jones is only 24-years-old, and, with his physical ability, if he cleans up his act off the field and remains healthy on the field, Jones could have another 10 years in the league.

The Cowboys are currently $3.9 million under the salary cap. Jones is set to earn $1.29 million when he returns, a figure that could very easily be renegotiated to a lower price by the Dallas Cowboys.

Roger Goodell is set to review Jones' suspension before the start of training camps. It's possible that Jones could be reinstated this season.

The Cowboys took a chance on Terrell Owens, a guy who no one was interested in and many thought had reached the end of his career through his self-destruction. Albeit, Owens' problems had more to do with his teammates and coaches than with the law.

The Cowboys are making the right move by inquiring about Jones. A player with Jones' ability, who is still only young, can change, particularly if he is on a highly successful football team. Playing for a team like the Cowboys might be just what Jones needs to get his mind back into the game of football.

With the Cowboys being below the salary cap and the opportunity to renegotiate Jones' contract to $1 million, possibly even less, Jones could be worth the risk.

Who knows? Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys could get lucky and catch lightning in a bottle again with Pacman Jones.
