Jay Cutler: Longtime Chicago Bears Fan Would Fit Perfectly In Windy City Now
I happen to be one of those diehard Bears fans who collects Bears info like Travis Henry collects illegitimate children. Therefore, I would like to share a remembrance of a little tidbit that will surely stoke the fire and desire of all my fellow Bears acolytes.
Jay Cutler grew up idolizing the Bears and his childhood dream was to be Da Bears' starting QB. I come with this information stuck in my mind from one of the many pre-draft publications during the year Cutler was drafted (I can't remember which one exactly).
Cutler (who shall hereafter be referred to as JC, not coincidentally due to the fact many Bears fans see him as the messiah) grew up in Santa Claus, Ind. loving himself some Bears football. In the draft article, it talked about how big of Bears fans JC and his mom and pops were. Yes, even his mother is a fan of the Bears.
I remember this tearing my heart out a little because we had recently drafted Rex Grossman, who was coming back from injury and had yet to play his way out of favor. I knew that there was absolutely no way the team would switch horses midstream and go for the kid with a much stronger arm and who wasn't scared of the footsteps of opposing pass rushers, just because that kid was all but begging the Bears to take him.
Okay, perhaps begging is a little too strong. But any player that would openly talk about his and his family's man-love (Yes, Mrs. C, this includes you) for the Bears in a pre-draft forum in a national publication is going against unwritten etiquette that you don't profess your love for a team that has no chance of drafting you. And yet, he did just that.
Which indicates a strong love of all things Bears, and to hell with the hurt feelings of whatever team wants to draft him and the possible money it might cost him.
Now, as a Chicago sports fan, I know that it is an unwritten axiom that the players we tend to get from the greater Chicago area tend to stink up the field. But, in-depth analysis would show that this is because the majority of players that fit this criteria are fringe major leaguers that the woeful Cubs bring in that didn't have a shot in the first place.
Recently, there has been much speculation that the Bears would try to acquire Donovan McNabb, who is from Chicago, and who, synergy suggests, would be great here. I remember the year D-Mac was drafted; he didn't express any Bear love pre-draft, or really, since then.
Wouldn't most any team in their right minds want a QB who is younger, has a stronger arm, and who loves the team so much that he speaks of it to his possible detriment? Salary-wise, I can't believe there is that great of difference that even the notoriously cheap McLaskey clan would shirk JC while speculatively agreeing to take on the large salary of an aging QB who is had a bunch of injury issues as well.
All this analysis about how Cutler would fit perfectly in the Windy City aside, I am resolved, as a long-time Chicago sports fan, that this will never happen. Anytime something seems so right for Chi-town sports, leave it to the upper management to screw the pooch and the fans right along with it.
