Julius Peppers WIth New England Patriots Creates Scary Good Front Seven

chris simoneauMar 16, 2009

This is starting to get scary.

The Patriots seem angry. All the moves were typical Patriot moves so far: Fred Taylor, Chris Baker, Joey Galloway, Al Johnson (nice move), all guys aging or just flat-out replaced, but all can play. These are the pieces needed to tighten the best offense in the league already.

It looks obvious...get some guys who can run and block to protect Tom, and grab an aging speedster to make defenses think twice about blitzing when Moss, Galloway, and Welker are running around together.

They weren't shy about fixing some holes in the defense either. Shawn Springs and Leigh Bodden are huge upgrades from last year. It was painful to watch the amount of long passes, not even touchdowns, being given up by a secondary with no speed last year. Sorry, Ellis Hobbs, you're a nickel back. Get over it.

So we get to the point where we have traded away the aging Mike Vrabel (think Willie McGinest his last year here and the level of ineffectiveness) and Matt Cassel and got our No. 34 pick for basically a backup QB and an aging $4 million LB, and we are ready to roll into the draft and get younger.

And then the news comes out today that the Patriots are considering signing Julius Peppers.

Bill Belichick remembered his meal ticket: The front seven. For the rest of the league, this is a scary thought. Anyone who thinks that Bill cant get the best out of Peppers is crazy.

I keep reading reports about Adalius Thomas being a bust of a pickup for the Pats. Really? Do you watch the games? The season truly ended last year when he was lost for the year. You team him up with the freakish Peppers, it is going to be truly scary. Who do you block?

If Peppers comes, the front seven consists of him, Richard Seymour, Vince Wilfork,Ty Warren, Adalius Thomas, Tedy Bruschi, and Jerod Mayo. Soak that in, offensive coordinators.

The best part about all this is the draft. Giving up just one second-round pick for an All-Pro makes it so the Pats still have a first, two seconds, and two thirds. Traditionally, they land a starter or contributor with their first-round pick. With the linebackers and corners likely to be available, the Patriots will strengthen a defense that will have just been injected by talent with Peppers, Springs and Bodden.

The Patriots have a chance to have the No. 1 offense and defense next year.

People complained about blowouts and running up the score in 2007. Well, guess what? It is going to be worse this year. Now, the Patriots will have a defense that is as dynamic as its offense, and that is the last thing that anybody in the NFL wants to see, unless your office is in Foxborough.
