Note To Vikings: Cutler Officially On The Block

Mike GumtoMar 15, 2009

Well the NFL offseason just got a little bit more interesting.  Somehow, someway, the Broncos and their new coach Josh McDaniels have found a way to turn a minor issue into a full blown problem.

You have to wonder what McDaniels is thinking  Now, granted Cutler hasn't exactly brought the Bronco's to anything of merit yet.  But the guy has a big time arm, just played in his first Pro Bowl, and dare I say one of the top five QB's in the NFL today.  To trade him you better get someone back you really, really covet.  Franchise QB's do not grow on tree's.  Someone should inform McDaniels of that.  What should have been a simple meet and greet, and soothing of Cutler's ego with a handshake and vote of confidence, has now turned into what will be daily trade speculation and wild tales of "who said what" at a time when the young gunslinger should be honing his skills and playbook.

This all could have been averted if Bowlen and Co. had simply given Cutler the thumbs up and explained HE was their QB of the future.  Instead the first year head coach, and first year GM completely blew it.  Cutler's deal has three years remaining on it.  That said, instead of telling Cutler that trading him is not going to happen, it seems as though they are will to do just that.  And by just entertaining that idea, to me is simply ridiculous.

The next month leading up to the draft will be get more interesting with every passing week.  I think Cutler is close to reaching the point of no return.  The Broncos now have two options.

1. Call Cutler back in a few days after he cools off, and apologize profusely, take him to the best steakhouse in town, and then hope he has a sudden change of heart.  Re-sign him to a new deal to show your good faith in him.

2.  Start by calling several teams and hope that despite showing your hand so to speak, hope that you can generate a bidding war of sorts for him.  I would think at least three teams would be willing to give the farm for this guy.  The Vikings did it last year for Jared Allen, and it worked out out great for them  Can you picture this guy with AP in the backfield?  I don't think there's a scarier team in the NFC if you put a legitimate QB on the Vikings.  Sage Rosenfels was a nice acquisition, but let's be serious for a moment.  Sage, a career backup, is no Cutler.  He never will be.  Chances to acquire QB's entering their prime don't come along very often.  Either way, Zygi and Chilly should be trying to figure out a way to make Cutler a Viking.

Either way, you would also think the Lions who appear to be being aggressive as well, and the 49ers would line up for this guy. Both of those teams do not have the position talent that Minnesota currently has, but adding a Pro Bowl QB is a heck of a way to start your new coaching regime and generate fan interest again.

So let me take a moment to pose a question for Mr. Bowlen. What I really don't get is this Mr. Bowlen: Who, in their right mind, trades a franchise QB entering his prime??  Maybe we should ask Carl Peterson the same question about Jared Allen...oh, wait, I forgot, Carl Peterson is no longer....
