Disappointed Bowlen Endorsing McDaniels, Considering Options on Cutler

Chaz MattsonMar 15, 2009

Late Friday afternoon in Denver it was reported on 104.3 FM The Fan radio that one of his three houses was up for sale. That was the house belonging to his parents.

By Saturday morning, Jay Cutler was reportedly selling his primary home as well.

Mike Kliss of the Denver Post reports that sometime on Saturday Jay Cutler did meet with Josh McDaniels face to face and the meeting did not go well; it eventually erupted.

The Sunday morning Denver Post reported that Pat Bowlen was very disappointed in the fact that this might lead to the departure of his star quarterback. He also went on to say he was fully endorsing Josh McDaniels as the coach.

Later Sunday afternoon it was reported on all the major Denver affiliates that Jay Cutler and Tony Scheffler will not be reporting to the Broncos mandatory meeting and team workout at Dove Valley tomorrow. Scheffler was mentioned as a possible trade asset as well. Tony has been one of Cutler’s primary targets over the last three seasons and is obviously friends with him as well.

It’s possible other Broncos may not be showing at this meeting as well.

To date, the Broncos have said that they will not trade Jay Cutler, however Mr. Bowlen has been hoping things would work out.

According to Mike Kliss on KWGN 2 in Denver, Jay has one foot out the door, and appears to not be the QB for next season since he appears to be near the point of no return.

That is what is known as of late Sunday night in Denver.

What is not known entirely is this:

Is Bus Cook leading Jay Cutler astray? Why has Jay Cutler left Denver bound for Nashville?

Bus is the same agent that lead to Brett Favre’s departure with Green Bay and aided in the trade to the New York Jets.

Mr. Bowlen appears to have his hands full at this point in time. He has endorsed his new head coach, which from a fickle business point of view is the right move to make.

From a stronger football point of view at this point is possibly one of the biggest mistakes he has made as the owner of the Broncos. The only real out for the Broncos at this point if Bowlen chooses to stick with Coach McDaniels is that he must win quickly, and win a lot of games.  For Josh—if he makes it to the season—it’s playoffs or bust.

The oddity here is that most teams that have won the Super Bowl have a seasoned or growing talent at the quarterback position. For instance, picture a young Tom Brady replacing the seasoned Drew Bledsoe in New England.

However, Josh McDaniels clearly couldn’t get the job done on the Matt Cassel trade and appears to have still lacked the humility to help Jay feel better about moving forward.

Granted Jay is irate at this point. Put yourself in his shoes for a minute. If you were the quarterback of the number two offense and one of your best offensive team players was released (Nate Jackson) and one of your favorite receivers is also on the trading block, how would you take it?

The issue here is much deeper but it has done more than just bubble to the surface. It has now boiled over and it is on high, with no sign of the burner being turned off.

Some specific words between McDaniels and Cutler were exchanged. What exactly those words were is not entirely known though some quotes have made it to press. The end result is Jay Cutler now reportedly, officially wants to be traded since the Broncos have left the door open to trading him from Denver.

Meanwhile Josh McDaniels has come in totting the Bill Belichick way into Denver. He has not been held accountable for blowing up one of the leagues worst defenses and one of the leagues best offenses.

With such a slim margin for success to be met, the question of the hour is: has the New England way really worked for the Broncos?
