Dan Wernery Plays GM for 32 teams: Where Do I Draft a DT or 3-4 DE?

DANIEL WERNERYMar 15, 2009
It has always been a dream of mine to be an NFL General Manager. During this series of articles, I will act as the General Manager for all 32 teams and place each team into three categories based on position need: High Priority, Moderate Priority and Depth Purposes only.

High Priority (Round One or Two)

Kansas City: What scheme are the Chiefs going to run long term? Scott Pioli is a 3-4 guy but this team needs to consider sticking with the 4-3 short term. Their two best players Glenn Dorsey and Tamba Hali are not build to play 3-4 DE or 3-4 OLB respectively.

The Chiefs can't go wrong with either BJ Raji or Aaron Curry. I would grade both guys heavily on character and football IQ more so than game film.

Seattle: The Seahawks run an aggressive scheme so run stuffing tackle is a must. If BJ Raji or Ron Brace are off the board when Seattle is on the clock in either round 1 or 2 respectively, I would wait until Day Two to draft a defensive tackle

Oakland: Tommy Kelly is serviceable but Gerard Warren and Terdell Sands are old and overweight. Once again the Raiders ranked below 30 in run defense. The value in the top 10 will not be at defensive tackle. Even though the need is great, the Raiders should go for best player available beyond round one due to overall lack of talent.

Green Bay: The Packers are trying to run a 3-4 defense without the proper personnel on the defensive line and at outside linebacker. The two best 3-4 defensive lineman outside of BJ Raji are Ron Brace and Jarron Gilbert. Getting one or the other is a must pick in the top of round two.

Tampa Bay: After squandering a second round pick on injury prone loudmouth Kellen Winslow, the Bucs cannot afford to miss on their first round pick. After getting rid of their overpriced aging roster, the Bucs should take best player available that is not an offensive lineman.

Minnesota: With Pat and Kevin Williams facing four game suspensions, this might be an ideal spot to take Ron Brace or Peria Jerry.

Atlanta: If Brandon Pettigrew is who you want draft him! Forget about the 40 time, Pettigrew is the best pass catching and blocking tight end. Don't pass on a potential franchise changing weapon in the passing game for an average group of defensive tackles.

Indianapolis: The Colts like undersized one gap defensive tackles. If that's the case, wait until day two to address this need. The Colts need to address their declining run game. Running back will be loaded once the Colts are on the clock in round one.

Tennessee: Losing Albert Haynesworth won't be that big of a loss. Haynesworth played hard only for a big pay day. Jeff Fisher is a master talent evaluator on defense so the Titans don't have to reach in round one. Wide receiver is the biggest need on this team and the cupboard will not be bare at the end of round one.

Moderate Priority (Round Three or Four)

Detroit, St Louis, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Jacksonville, Buffalo, Denver, New Orleans, Houston, San Diego, Chicago, Arizona, and Pittsburgh: Unless a player is a perfect fit for your scheme don't reach before round four.

Depth Purposes Only (Round Five or lower)

San Francisco, NY Jets, Washington, Dallas, Philadelphia, New England, Miami, Baltimore, Carolina, and NY Giants
