New York Yankees Injury Updates

Joe Girardi spoke to A-Rod yesterday and is happy to report he appears to be recovering nicely. A-Rod is expected to begin rehabbing according to schedule, and there is some possibility he might visit Tampa Bay before the end of Spring Training. It’s still projected that he’ll return to the lineup in May.
The additional good news is that A-Rod’s injury can’t be blamed on the WBC or steroids.
Robinson Cano was diagnosed with tendonitis in his right shoulder and will undergo an MRI scan on March 15. Having to undergo an MRI is not good news, but Cano did manage to pinch hit for Matsui today, succeeding in hitting the ball sharply to third. Let’s keep our fingers cross Cano did not aggravate his condition with that one at-bat.
Cano’s “partner in crime” Damaso Marte was diagnosed with left shoulder inflammation and he, too, will undergo an MRI tomorrow.
Pitcher Jason Johnson returned after being treated for a cancerous tumor behind his eye. He said, “Everything feels good.”
Johnson allowed two hits during a scoreless ninth inning. We have a lot to be optimistic about with Johnson’s return to good health.
Also worthy of mention in the injury department, Dustin Pedroia was sidelined from WBC games after feeling a shooting pain in his left side, ultimately discovering he has a strained left oblique.
Pedroia is another victim of having trained a little too vigorously for the classic games.
Pedroia said, “Maybe I pushed it a little too hard, too fast to get this going.”
Of course, Pedroia’s injury may or may not affect the Yankees in the 2009 season, but I just thought this information was interesting enough to be included in close proximty to my previous blog about WBC injuries.
Well, I do wish all the players a speedy recovery—including Pedroia—because they’re all needed to make the 2009 season an exciting one.
