Sean Avery and John Tortorella Should Go On Oprah for Anger Management Show

Martin AveryMar 14, 2009

Anger management is in the news thanks to Oprah, Rihanna, Chris Brown, and Anthony Cherrington, not to mention Sean Avery and John Tortorella.

The New York Rangers took Sean Avery back after Anger Management and it appears to be working for both of them. Avery is avoiding fights, penalties, and trash talk and is scoring goals. The Rangers ended their longest skid since 1965, turned into a Cinderella team, and are back in the Stanley Cup playoff picture.

Avery appears to have abandoned his old role as agitator and accepted a new role as goal scorer. His energetic play earned him a spot on the Rangers top line and he responded with a goal-a-game.

Sydney Roosters forward Anthony Cherrington is undertaking anger management classes and counselling after pleading guilty to an assault from last year. The 20-year-old forward admitted to striking his girlfriend in the face and on the body, before threatening her with a knife. He then smashed her sunglasses, mobile phone and car mirrors 10 days later.

Cherrington has been named in the New Zealand training squad for the 2008 Rugby League World Cup.

Oprah Winfrey's latest show about "dating violence" featured Chris Brown's alleged beating of Rihanna.

Brown is a huge star in the world of music and acting, compared to Michael Jackson for his dance routines, best known for his hit singles Run It, Kiss Kiss, and Forever.

Rihanna is a singer, model, former beauty queen, a cultural ambassador for Barbados, best known for number one hit songs "SOS", "Umbrella", "Take a Bow", "Disturbia" and T.I.'s "Live Your Life".

The show with Brown and Rihanna was one of those TV moments when Oprah becomes a nationwide town meeting, in which Winfrey uses her extraordinary outreach and influence on America to try and shed light and counsel on a cultural issue. Oprah dedicated the hour to "all the Rihannas in the world, and all the young men who would think of hitting a woman."

A report from Entertainment Tonight correspondent Kevin Frazier says Rihanna and Brown are recording a duet and may write a book together about domestic violence,

At Winfrey's side was Tyra Banks, who'd given over her own talk show to the same topic earlier in the day, and repeated a sentiment she used there: "There's no excuse for a man to put his hands on a woman, ever, ever, ever."

She concluded by calling out, "God bless, Rihanna, Chris!"

It has been widely reported that R&B singer Chris Brown will pay Rihanna more than R105-million if he “as much as squeezes her arm the wrong way”, British tabloid The Sun reported yesterday.

Brown, 19, who was accused of two assaults on his singer girlfriend, reportedly stemming from an altercation between the two on the night of the Grammy Awards, February 8.

Brown and Rihanna, 21, have since made up, but he still faces four years in jail if convicted of assaulting the Barbadian singer.

Sean Avery's turnaround after anger management, especially his comeback with the New York Rangers with famously fiery coach John Tortorella would make a good Oprah episode.

Avery is a celebrity in the worlds of Hollywood and fashion, as well as hockey, after serving as a Vogue intern and guest editor of Men's Vogue, doing a Gap ad, and having a column he wrote for Men's Vogue turned into a movie by New Line Cinema.

Coincidentally, the musical produced by Oprah, based on the movie and novel The Color Purple, featuring Shug Avery, closed on Broadway and went on tour just as Sean Avery returned to New York with the Rangers.
