Manchester United-Liverpool and Chelsea-Arsenal: Big Weekend for EPL

Andrew McNairMar 19, 2008

Let's start with a look back at last nights EPL action with the Ronaldo show continuing at Old Trafford, but the game of the week and arguably the season, took place at White hart Lane.

Tottenham Hotspur 4-4 Chelsea was an amazing game and I'm still kicking myself that I didn't watch it live. Chelsea will be kicking themselves after surrendering the lead, not once but twice to their London rivals.

Spurs will be happy having equalized at the death thanks to a Robbie Keane strike. The result will be a big boost for the morale of both the players and the White Hart Lane faithful.

The game was over shadowed by a rather bad challenge on Alan Hutton by Ashley Cole. To his credit Alan Hutton has moved to squash more bad tackle speculation by playing down the role of Cole in the challenge.

So now to the Christiano Ronaldo show. He scored twice for United as they overcame Bolton Wanderers 2-0 at Old Trafford. Ronaldo has now scored 33 goals for United this season, which overhauls George Best's United record of 32 goals in a season for a winger.

This a tremendous achievement for the player and has probably already got his name on both PFA player awards come the end of the season.

This weekend the EPL has one of it's biggest weekends of the season with the top four clashing on Super Sunday. First let's take a look at Saturday's fixtures.

Tottenham Hotspur take on Portsmouth in the early kick off. This has the makings of another great match. Portsmouth play extremely well away from home and Spurs are certainly not goal shy.

Sunderland travel south to take on Aston Villa in a game Sunderland won't have marked down as a potential win. Any points however will be a boost to Sunderlands survival hopes. Villa will be looking for 3 points to get their European ambitions back on track.

Blackburn Rovers host Wigan Athletic and are another side who are aiming for Europe this season. This then is a must win for Rovers as they chase a UEFA Cup spot. Wigan will see any result here as points gained as they continue to move away from the relegation dogfight.

Bolton Wanderers face a Manchester City side desperate to relight their season. City have been off colour recently but will still expect a win at lowly Bolton. The Trotters on the other hand are desperate for points as the teams above them slowly move away. With Fulham behind them having picked up all 3 points last week it's time for Bolton to prove they are good enough to stay up.

Bottom of the EPL Derby County travel to Middlesbrough on Saturday looking to build on last weeks great perfomance at home to Manchester United. Middlesbrough will fancy the win and should be clear of the relegation battle come 5pm.

Newcastle United are at home to Fulham. The magnitude of this game should not be lost on anyone reading this. Failure to beat Fulham at home will be a major step towards relegation for the Magpies. Simply put if they can't beat Fulham at home, who can they beat? Making things worse for Newcastle is that Fulham, who beat high flying Everton last week, will really fancy this one.

There is another relegation battle at the Madjeski Stadium with Reading entertaining Alex McLeish's Birmingham City. Both teams have shown glimpses of quality this season but either one could very easily be the team to drop this season. A must win for both teams as the EPL is counting down.

The late kick off on Saturday pits Everton against the unpredicatble West Ham United. Everton will be keen to get back to winning ways against a West Ham side who recently have been pretty poor. West Ham will simply be aiming to stop the rot.

This leads us into Sunday where the EPL's biggest clubs are set to do battle.

The first game see's Manchester United at home to an inform Liverpool. Having said that their is nothing wrong with Man Utd's form going into this one. The game pits Ronaldo against Fernando Torres and I'd put my money on one of these two being the match winner.

Both teams need a victory but I'm sure Sir Alex would be more upset should this one end tied.

Lastly we have Chelsea against London neighbours Arsenal. With Chelsea having slipt up last night this is a must win game if they are to be involved in the title fight. Arsenal also need the win to keep in touch with leaders Manchester United. There will be no mention of draws going into this one and I predict an exciting open game.

If not then Manchester United will just keep on walking towards EPL glory!
