Woods and Zorn Score First NCAA Goals as Cornell Beats Terriers
A record crowd of 1,891 (which shatters the February 2012 attendance record of 1,129 for the Beanpot) at Boston University’s Agganis Arena witnessed the Cornell Big Red defeat the Terriers by a 5-2 mark. The match carried a lot of emotion as the Big Red defeated the Terriers by an 8-7 mark in the 2012 NCAA Regional Tournament.
The October 20 contest saw the second ranked Cornell Big Red win its first game of the season with the efforts of two freshmen, Anna Zorn and Taylor Woods. Zorn played her club hockey for the Rochester EDGE and was team captain in their final year. In addition to hockey, Zorn participated in softball and soccer in high school.
Taylor Woods participated with the Canadian Under-18 National Team and participated in the 2011 Winter Games. With the Notre Dame Hounds, she accumulated 19 points in the Esso Cup championship tournament.
Although the first period remained scoreless, the Big Red outshot Boston University by a 9-7 mark. Terriers captain Marie-Philip Poulin scored the first goal of the contest in the second stanza. Co-captain Jill Cardella grabbed the puck behind the net and set up Poulin for the opening score.
Freshman Anna Zorn (whose older sister Liz Zorn once played for Cornell) tucked a rebound past Terriers all-time wins leader Kerrin Sperry to even the score. Nearly two minutes after the tie goal, the Terriers struck back. Despite a shot by Kaleigh Fratkin that was blocked by Cornell backstop Lauren Slebodnick, sensational Sarah Lefort retrieved the puck and passed to Jill Cardella, who logged her second point of the contest.
Despite the Terriers 1-0 and 2-1 leads, Cornell proved to be too strong. At the 9:45 mark of the second period, freshman Taylor Woods beat Sperry on the glove side as Morgan Richardson served a penalty for the Big Red. Emily Fulton would score at 10:47 as the Big Red took the lead.
The third period saw stifling defense on the part of the Big Red as the beleaguered Terriers only managed seven shots on net. Monika Leck added to Cornell’s lead, while Jessica Campbell scored an empty-net goal with 53 seconds left in the contest for a 5-2 final score. Backstop Lauren Slebodnick made 25 saves for the first win of the season.
