Premier League Transfers: 5 Most Sensational January Rumors from the Last 7 Days

Charlie MelmanOct 24, 2012

Though there is a limit to how many transfer rumors can actually be legitimate, the mill keeps churning out speculation every day during and outside of transfer windows.

As a result, we see many stories with seeming credibility from unnamed "sources" that try to convince us that even the most ridiculous, illogical transfers are imminent. Just wait until the next transfer window opens.

The vast majority—and I'm talking basically 100 percent—of these rumors are false. Purely sensational, these stories should be regarded as entertainment only.

Read on to see some of the worst from the past seven days.

Jesus Navas and Alvaro Negredo to Arsenal or Spurs

Whenever you hear of a double swoop or some similar move for multiple players at the same time, you might as well write it off as false on the spot.

That is especially true when said rumor involves Arsenal, a notoriously stingy club that has never made this type of radical move and does not look like starting now.

With the glut of strikers and especially wingers at both Arsenal and Tottenham, this rumor from talkSPORT just seems like something concocted to rile up gullible fans.

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar to Liverpool

2 of 5

Liverpool do desperately need a striker, especially with the recent news that Fabio Borini will be out for a few months with a foot injury. But splurging on a player of Klaas-Jan Huntelaar's quality is out of the question.

Owners Fenway Sports Group are currently preoccupied in America with picking up the pieces of a ruinous Boston Red Sox season and certainly will not be cavalier about splashing the type of cash it will take to bring Huntelaar to Merseyside.

The top scorer in the Bundesliga last season, Huntelaar is the centerpiece of a very successful Schalke 04 side, and his role at Liverpool would not be defined for the long term.

Theo Walcott and Daniel Sturridge to Liverpool

3 of 5

We've already said that Liverpool don't have the stomach for more massive transfer deals, and double swoops should immediately act as major red flags to a fan.

Combine the two, and it's a recipe for a bogus transfer rumor.

The Daily Mail claims that Chelsea wants money to finance a potential deal for Radamel Falcao, the footballer of the moment, while Theo Walcott's contract situation means that a £10 million fee would "suit" both Arsenal and Liverpool.

Brendan Rodgers might like each player objectively (and even that we don't really know), but he's not getting them both in January. In fact, I'd be willing to bet he gets neither.

David de Gea to Real Madrid

4 of 5

David de Gea has been at Manchester United for a little over a year now and is getting more solid with every game. Iker Casillas is 31 and in the prime of his career.

So, really, why would this deal ever happen?

Really, it won't. You know it, I know it and Mark Ogden of The Telegraph knows it—he just needed something to write about.

There's nothing wrong with that really—we've all been there, and he might have been assigned that piece. But any sensible football fan knows that, while the remote possibility exists that de Gea might move back to Spain in the distant future, that transfer is years away from happening.

Cesc Fabregas and Sergio Busquets to Manchester City

5 of 5

Again, I ask you to think about why this move would happen—what is either side's incentive to get a deal done?

Again, I really can't think of any.

We already know that Cesc Fabregas is perfectly happy at his hometown club, despite having to fight Xavi, Andres Iniesta, David Villa, Alexis Sanchez and others for a spot in Barcelona's starting XI. And Sergio Busquets is still the rock at the back of the Blaugrana's famous midfield trio.

While the club's detractors might not think so, Barcelona is truly més que un club to Catalonia's native sons, who are not motivated by, nor are being offered the prospect of more money in Manchester.

As with the vast majority of rumors from this time of year, this is pure sensationalism.
