Ohio State Football, What to Expect This Spring

Kurt ReesMar 11, 2009

Yes, it is that time of year and the question is starting to fly.

What does Ohio State need to work on this spring?

After watching the seniors leave, and a handful of underclassmen jump to the NFL, it is obvious to Ohio State followers that many holes need to be filled.

There are many things to look for this spring. I looked at current depth and experience, and came to the conclusion that the OSU secondary is very thin and is probably the weakest link on the team.

With the departure of Malcolm Jenkins, Donald Washington, and Jamario O'Neal, it leaves a serious need. Chimdi Chekwa, Jermale Hines, and Anderson Russell are the only returning players with extensive playing time. With Andre Amos being the only other CB with playing time, this may give freshmen newcomers C.J. Barnett and Dominic Clarke a chance to prove themselves.

The linebackers are the next group to look at this spring. James Laurinaitis and Marcus Freeman leave a huge void with many to fight for these positions. Ross Homan is the only returning starter, while Etienne Sabino, Tyler Moeller, Brian Rolle, and Andrew Sweat look to fill the open positions. Look for incoming freshman Dorian Bell to get some reps as well.

Now, I don't feel too insecure about the offensive line, but it seems to be the most talked about of the positions. We did have some departures. Alex Boone, Steve Rehring, and Kyle Mitchum are now gone, but there are very good newcomers.

Michael Brewster played last season at center, but Jack Mewhort should fill in to that position nicely. That would free up Brewster to fill in at a tackle spot. Mike Adams will start at tackle, and look for J.B. Shuggarts and Michigan transfer Justin Boren to fill in the guard positions.

Bryant Browning and Jim Cordle started last year and do return, so it would not be a surprise if one of these guys filled in one of the spots. The offensive line is all about timing, and any of these men has the potential to fill a need.

These are the three areas to look at this spring.

I am curious how Terrelle Pryor makes the adjustment from his freshman to sophomore year, and how the young wide receivers perform. These are minor concerns compared to the lack of position players and who will step up in the secondary, offensive line, and linebacking corp.

I have few worries for this year's team.

It should be a fun one to watch.
