NFL Week 7 Injury Report: Who's Hurting the Most After Week 6?
With another wild NFL weekend complete, injuries have taken their toll on many teams around the league. The Baltimore Ravens received the worst news this weekend, as both Lardarius Webb and Ray Lewis will miss the remainder of the season due to injuries.
As the halfway point of the current season nears, which teams will be most affected by injuries following Week 6?
Kansas City Chiefs
1 of 7Most Notable Injuries
QB Matt Cassel (Concussion) - Missed Week 6
DL Glenn Dorsey (Calf) - Missed Week 6
RB Peyton Hillis (Ankle) - Missed Week 6
The Kansas City Chiefs piled another loss onto their disappointing start to the 2012 season. This time, they were outclassed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from start to finish.
It doesn't help that the Chiefs are plagued by a variety of injuries on both sides of the football.
Most notably, Matt Cassel missed Sunday's game with a concussion, and though he's begun participating in non-contact drills, his status for next week's game is still to be determined. Although Cassel's play hasn't been that impressive, Brady Quinn isn't a much better solution for this AFC West doormat.
Romeo Crennel says that Peyton Hillis and Glenn Dorsey continue to struggle with their injuries and it's still unclear if they will play Sunday against the Oakland Raiders.
New England Patriots
2 of 7Most Notable Injuries
WR Brandon Lloyd (Shoulder) - Left Sunday's Game
RB Brandon Bolden (Knee) - Left Sunday's Game
S Patrick Chung (Shoulder) - Left Sunday's Game
WR Julian Edelman (Hand) - Missed Week 6
LB Dont'a Hightower (Hamstring) - Missed Week 6
The New England Patriots were on the losing end for the third time this season and didn't leave Seattle without a few injuries.
Brandon Lloyd and Brandon Bolden left the game and weakened an offense that was already without Julian Edelman, which made Tom Brady's job much more difficult against the Seahawks secondary.
Meanwhile, the struggling defense played without Patrick Chung late in the game. He joins the list of multiple defensive starters who were unable to contribute substantially in Week 6.
Bill Belichick has given no indications on the future status of these players for the coming week.
Indianapolis Colts
3 of 7Most Notable Injuries
RB Donald Brown (Knee) - Missed Week 6
CB Vontae Davis (Ankle) - Missed Week 6
LB Robert Mathis (Knee) - Missed Week 6
DL Cory Redding (Knee) - Left Sunday's Game
The New York Jets dominated the Indianapolis Colts in all phases of their Week 6 contest. The Colts will look to turn around the losing trend immediately, but a few starters are likely to be non-factors in the coming weeks due to injuries.
Robert Mathis isn't expected to suit up for the next few games after injuring his knee against the Green Bay Packers in Week 5. Cory Redding suffered a knee injury that could potentially sideline him for this week, though his status is still up in the air.
The Colts defense could continue its downward slide as the injuries build up on the defensive front.
Andrew Luck didn't play well without running back Donald Brown, who has been the most consistent offensive target for the rookie behind veteran Reggie Wayne. Brown is not expected to play Sunday, as he continues to recover from knee surgery.
Green Bay Packers
4 of 7Most Notable Injuries
LB Nick Perry (Knee) - Left Week 6
DB Sam Shields (Leg) - Left Week 6
WR Greg Jennings (Groin) - Missed Week 6
DT B.J. Raji (Ankle) - Missed Week 6
The Green Bay Packers made a statement in their dominating win over the AFC-leading Houston Texans. However, can the Packers continue playing at a high level despite the injuries that continue to affect their team?
Nick Perry and Sam Shields left Sunday night's game, weakening a defense that has been one of the worst units in the league for the majority of the season. Head coach Mike McCarthy said to reporters that he will know more about their status for Week 7.
Although Aaron Rodgers had a phenomenal game against the Texans secondary, he has proved to be a more efficient passer with Greg Jennings healthy and in the lineup. It appears very unlikely that the veteran receiver will play Sunday against the Rams, as the Packers continue to be cautionary with his injury, according to this tweet from Bob McGinn.
Pittsburgh Steelers
5 of 7Most Notable Injuries
S Ryan Clark (Hip) - Left Week 6
RB Rashard Mendenhall (Knee) - Left Week 6
RB Isaac Redman (Ankle) - Left Week 6
S Troy Polamalu (Calf) - Missed Week 6
The Pittsburgh Steelers lost on the road against the Tennessee Titans due to an increasing number of injuries on the roster.
Once considered the best defense in football, the Steelers were unable to contain both Chris Johnson and Matt Hasselbeck over the course of the game. This was largely due to the absence of LaMarr Woodley, Troy Polamalu and Ryan Clark—three of the more valuable players on this veteran defense.
Polamalu has already been ruled out for Week 7, which leaves doubt about how much he can contribute if he isn't near full health.
Meanwhile, Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh-Post Gazette reports that running backs Rashard Mendenhall and Issac Redman are questionable for Sunday's game.
The Steelers offense has been more effective when the running game has been established, and the lack of a running game has led to a losing record through the first six weeks of the season.
Dallas Cowboys
6 of 7Most Notable Injuries
CB Morris Claiborne (Knee) - Questionable For Week 7
RB DeMarco Murray (Foot) - Left Week 6
DL Sean Lissemore (Ankle) - Left Week 6
DL Marcus Spears (Knee) - Missed Week 6
LB Anthony Spencer (Shoulder) - Missed Week 6
The Dallas Cowboys fell short of pulling out a road victory against the Ravens, and they left Baltimore with more key players suffering injuries.
DeMarco Murray suffered a foot injury and could potentially miss a few weeks, reports Brandon George of The Dallas Morning News.
The defense continues to take a hit with injuries, as Morris Claiborne and Sean Lissemore had to leave the game on Sunday. However, Claiborne returned to the Week 6 contest after a left knee injury, and Jerry Jones expects him to play, as per the link above. However, the question is how effective Claiborne will be while dealing with soreness in his knee.
Anthony Spencer isn't expected to return anytime soon, as he can be out for as long as six weeks, according to Todd Archer of ESPNDallas.com.
The Cowboys have been struggling due in large part to the injuries on the offense. Can this team become a factor in the competitive NFC with the recent injuries on defense?
Baltimore Ravens
7 of 7Most Notable Injuries
CB Lardarius Webb (ACL tear) - Out for season
LB Ray Lewis (Triceps) - Out for season
DL Haloti Ngata (Knee) - Left Week 6
The Baltimore Ravens took two major hits on Sunday when it was announced that both Lardarius Webb and Ray Lewis would miss the remainder of the season.
Although the defense may be happy that Haloti Ngata is still playing, his MCL strain should limit him from being 100 percent for the majority of the season.
Terrell Suggs has missed the first six games due to an Achilles injury, and has been cleared to practice on a "limited basis," according to Aaron Wilson of The Baltimore Sun.
With all these injuries, the timing couldn't be any better for the AFC North leader.
