Fantasy Football 2009 Expert Mock Draft: Round 10 Recap

Michael WhooleyMar 10, 2009

The 2008 fantasy football season might have just ended, but that doesn't mean you can sit back and relax until it gets closer to the 2009 fantasy football season.

The offseason is when you scout players, look at coaching changes, and plow through game log after game log to find consistency at each position.

Since our job never ends here at Bruno Boys Fantasy Football, we teamed up with five other fantasy publications and started a 2009 Fantasy Football Mock Draft.

Below you will find one of many round-by-round recaps of the mock draft, in which ten fantasy football experts show you a glimpse of what your 2009 draft might look like.

Now it's time to take a look at Round 10 of our January/February 2009 Fantasy Football Expert Mock Draft...

--------------------

10.01:  Bruno Boys Larry -  RB Earnest Graham

Once again I am looking to add depth to my team at the key positions. Earnest Graham should help provide some nice depth at running back. He missed the final sx games of last season due to an injured ankle, but he still managed to gain 563 yards (averaged 4.3 per carry) with four touchdowns.

He scored in double-figures six times in the 10 games he played in 2008, and he should be the featured running back for the Buccaneers in 2009.

--------------------

10.02:  Bruno Boys Cavigs - QB Donovan McNabb

Usually, I am targeting my quarterback around the eighth round, but with every team except mine already having a starting QB, and the amount of talent still available, I have decided to wait until the 10th round to fill the need.

By getting Donovan McNabb, it gives me a solid quarterback that should do a fine job of complimenting my skill positions. With DeSean Jackson coming into his own as a WR, and the Eagles expected to make a push for more talent at the position during the offseason, McNabb should have plenty of weapons to choose from heading into 2009.

He finished 2008 with at least 15 fantasy points in three of his last four games and continued his torrid pace during the Eagles postseason run to the NFC Championship game.

Being that McNabb has bad stretches during the season and is prone to injury, I will be targeting a backup QB in round 11 or 12, but I am more than pleased by the fact I was able to draft him at No. 102 overall.

--------------------

10.03: Fighting Chance Fantasy -  TE Dustin Keller

I can't believe I am drafting a team with two tight ends in the first 10 rounds, but if Chris Cooley is going to again have a season where he can't find his way to the end-zone, I would like another good option at the position.

Dustin Keller showed big flashes of what he was capable of when the Jets were winning, and although they don't have Brett Favre anymore (for now anyway), Keller should be a solid option no matter who the quarterback is.

Keller has the capability to be the type of tight end that can be like having another wide receiver out there.

--------------------

10.04: Bruno Boys Cory - QB Matt Ryan

Now it's time to find backups and I was looking at either a QB or WR here. The receivers have been plucked pretty thin and I felt I could still get the one I want later, so I decided to go with Matt Ryan.

What's not to like about this guy?

Was cool and calm in the pocket all year long as a rookie and put up decent numbers as well. His average yards per attempt of 7.93 shows me that he's here to stay and didn't just get really lucky. He's got a good cast of players around him like Roddy White and Michael Turner and the line is improving as well.

I doubt I'll ever take Drew Brees out of the starting lineup besides the bye week, but just in case, I now have a consistent and reliable backup.

--------------------

10.05: Bruno Boys Ziza - QB Carson Palmer

After snagging QB Kurt Warner in the sixth round, and adding depth at the WR and RB positions in the rounds after that, it's time to grab perhaps the biggest risk/reward pick in 2009, Carson Palmer.

Palmer's arm injury caused him to put together a season to forget in 2008, but he has proven to fantasy owners that he can post solid statistics and grabbing him this late can lead to having two solid QBs in 2009 and using one of them as trade bait to get better at another position.

--------------------

10.06: Bruno Boys Whooley - Derrick Mason

Despite not getting any younger in age, Mason continues to excel in the mediocre Baltimore Ravens offense. For the fifth time in six years, Mason had 80+ receptions and 1,000 receiving yards as the Ravens made it to the AFC Championship game.

With quarterback Joe Flacco having another year to mature and the Baltimore shoring up their offensive line, Mason should continue to produce at a high level.

He is upset over a contract dispute, as Mason feels the Ravens should sign him long term, but all that aside expect him to contribute as a WR3 in standard leagues and have an extra bump in PPR leagues.

--------------------

10.07: Fantasy Football Librarian - TE Greg Olsen

Olsen is one of the few weapons that the Bears have going for them so far in 2009 and a great TE value in the 10th round. The third-year receiver breakout pattern will play out with Olsen in 2009 without a doubt.

He hauled in 54 receptions for 574 yards and five TDs this past year and was picking up steam as the season came to an end for the Bears—I have no doubt he'll keep up his four to five receptions per game and look forward to his continued red zone chemistry with Kyle Orton (especially if he can work on holding onto the ball a bit more).

--------------------

10.08: FantasyPros911.com - TE Kellen Winslow

This late in the draft, Kellen Winslow is a steal. Surely there are concerns over his health, but I'm looking for the Browns to bounce back offensively and in order to do that Winslow has to be a big part of that offense.

He has to be considered as one of the more dominating TE's in the game and I believe this is the year we see him put together the All-Pro type year we expect.  **write-up was done before the trade to Tampa Bay**

--------------------

10.09: Fantasy Football Xtreme - RB Ray Rice

At this stage in the draft, it's hard passing on a guy like Rice who could start in 2009. He isn't a lock to be the main main right out of the gate next season, but he is more than worth the risk in the 10th.

--------------------

10.10: Junkyard Jake - RB Laurence Maroney

Maroney was one of my favorite value running backs going into last season.  He was typically lasting into the second or third round, and in retrospect, I guess only the suckers were taking him there (me)

That said, it's unfair to evaluate Maroney using last year's disaster.  He was clearly limited by a shoulder injury he suffered in Week Two, and the Patriots tried to delay putting him on injured reserve.

If Maroney works hard this offseason to get back into shape, he is decisively the best RB option that the Patriots have, and it's hard to see how 33 year-old Sammy Morris and/or 32 year old Lamont Jordan will even be relevant.
