Arod Already Rehabbing Post Surgery

Bronx Baseball DailyMar 10, 2009

Alex Rodriguez underwent successful surgery yesterday that repaired a tear in the labrum in his hip, an injury that comes with a six-to-nine week recovery period.

Apparently, the time until he can start rehab was more like six to nine hours.

A-Rod had already ridden on a stationary bike by the afternoon, a move that surprised even his manager Joe Girardi.

“Did he want to take batting practice, too? That’s pretty amazing if that’s the case,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. “I don’t understand the hip or how you could do it. A guy who has a labrum tear in his arm wouldn’t throw the next day.”

According to his doctor, it won’t be much longer until he starts even more work.

“Hopefully by Friday or Sunday, we will start working on his muscle memory by having range-of-motion exercises that will involve the rotation of a batter's body when he swings,” Dr. Marc Philippon, who performed the surgery, said.

“There were no surprises,” Phillippon said. “There is no doubt in our minds that this was the best option. There is no doubt after having performed the procedure this was for sure the best option for Alex and for the Yankees.”

Girardi seems a bit alarmed that A-Rod is taking it so quickly. He said the six-to-nine week time frame seems do-able, but also noted that they may need to remind Alex to take it slow.

“The first step of it is done. You just hope the rehab goes as well as the surgery,” Girardi said.

“The one thing about Alex is we know he’s going to work and work and work. It might be a case where you have to hold him back a little bit because he’s going to be anxious to get back. They said six-to-nine weeks. Hopefully it’s fairly soon.”
