Is Braylon Edwards Worth Trading?

Cory HolibaughMar 9, 2009

So far in their offseason, the Cleveland Browns have gotten rid of one distraction in Kellen Winslow. Braylon Edwards has had a mouth in the past, so could he be the next to go?

Today I read an article written by the Bleacher Report's own Curt Kolp, which sparked my thoughts on Edwards.

In Curt's article, he debated whether or not Edwards is the Philadelphia Eagles answer at wide receiver. I strongly think Edwards could be the missing piece to their puzzle.

In 2007, Edwards had 80 receptions for 1,289 yards and 16 touchdowns. He was the best numbers-wise outside of Randy Moss. Edwards saw his production drop because the team's performance dropped. Numbers fell across the board for the Browns.

Derek Anderson went from a Pro-Bowler to being benched. Jamal Lewis averaged less than 4.0 yards per carry and ran as slow as a lineman. Simply said, Edwards is only as good as the team he is playing on.

Edwards' numbers have never been as great as the ones he posted in 2007, and on this rebuilding Browns team, they might never be.

If Edwards were to play on a winning team (say the Eagles,) he would feed on the adrenaline. He would thrive on excitement of the playoff run. He would be a great weapon and an elite receiver.

NFL fans that have watched Edwards know he has a knack for making phenomenal catches, but also has a tendency to drop the easy ones.

Teams looking to acquire a high-level receiver should know it's a give or take on his catching consistency. But what else about Edwards should make teams interested in him?

He's a big receiver with speed and he can separate downfield. Many of his touchdown receptions came on plays further than 20 yards. His size makes him a big target and his separation skills make him an easier one.

Edwards has the tools to be a high-level receiver, so why wouldn't a playoff team want him?Edwards hasn't been declared to be on the market, but with Mangini looking to straighten out this Cleveland team, he could be traded. So if Edwards is on the market, who would want him? And how much would it cost to get him?

Teams that could be interested include the Philadelphia Eagles, the New York Jets, the San Francisco 49ers, and the St. Louis Rams.

The Philidelphia Eagles have been lacking a big-play receiver for Donovan McNabb for a very long time. Terrell Owens was great, but a huge distraction more than anything. Donte Stallworth was a one-year bust, and others haven't been the answer either.

DeSean Jackson is nice and Kevin Curtis would've had a good season if he wasn't out for seven games. Adding Edwards would strengthen the Eagles receiver depth as well, giving McNabb many options.

Edwards has the right tools to become the receiver the Philly has been looking for, and the Eagles could be the team Edwards needs. The mix of Edwards potential and the Eagles playoff caliber talent could lead to something great.

The New York Jets, even though they still have Jerricho Cotchery, lost a good receiver in Laveranues Coles. Edwards could fit right in, helping the Jets playoff hopes grow. Plus, he likes the spotlight and he would get that in New York.

The San Francisco 49ers have a need at wideout. Isaac Bruce is old and nothing special anymore. Edwards would become their No. 1 right away.

If JT O'Sullivan is going to be the starting quarterback, he is going to need a receiver who can make things happen. The Niners playoff hopes aren't that high, but Edwards would be a nice acquisition for the team.

The St. Louis Rams are another potential suitor, as Torry Holt is decent but getting old. Drew Bennett only played one game last season, and isn't the youngest receiver either.

Edwards would like to go to a playoff team and the Rams are nowhere near contending, but the Rams need a receiver. Don't look for them to make a huge push, but he should be an option for them.

If anyone were to push for Edwards, the Eagles should push the strongest. They just need that missing piece to throw them over the top, and Edwards could be just that.

Not to mention, they owe McNabb for being so loyal despite getting benched last season and having no ring.

With these options and the Browns rebuilding, Mangini should consider trading Edwards if he gets the right deal. But what exactly is the right deal?

Edwards should be very valuable, but not worth a very high pick. He could go for a first-round pick, but then again he could get multiple lower picks if the Browns are looking to add depth instead of a starting player.

Braylon is worth a late first-rounder, or a second and fifth (just like Kellen Winslow.) And don't forget, if the Browns trade Edwards, they could very well take Michael Crabtree fifth overall in the draft.
