Selfishness, Self-Image and Why We Love Them

Jonathan WilliamsMar 7, 2009

Terrell Owens signed yet another contract.  One has to wonder just what the Buffalo Bills think they are getting.

It does go to show that there is a still a sucker born every minute.  Any one think the Bills are ready for the Super Bowl this year?

However, Terrell is only a symptom of what is the subject of this article.

Fans, players and owners have become increasingly selfish and self-absorbed.

During most hockey games, I have noticed a terrible habit.  One that I think if I was there I would say two words: "Sit down."

"Fans" are starting to do something which I find stupid on television.  When the play ends up in one end or the other, some guy, not sure why but it is almost always a guy, gets up waves at the camera while talking on a cellphone.

My first thought, why? No one watching except the person you are talking to wants to see you stand up like that. Two, why do you instantly turn your back on the action, even when play is exciting.

Now think about how people must feel behind you.

This is not just a hockey disease but it is the most noticeable there.

On the other hand is the drunk lout who thinks he is a soccer hooligan.  So he fights the other team's fans for no really good reason. This ruins sports for kids with their fine example.

Players seem have been catching this "me first" attitude as well.  Owens is only one example.  Manny is another.  They are not just a bit quirky, they are outright selfish.

Players want their piece, even if it costs their team a game.  That selfishness is unacceptable.

The height of selfishness.  Owners, who will rake in money from fans, from their players and from municipalities so that they can hold everyone hostage.

Teams that move for a reasons other than financial disability, creating a culture of selfishness that seems to pervade sports, every one wants their portion at the expense of everyone else.

Meanwhile, other owners like Al Davis and Jerry Jones have not really ever understood the concept that hiring the right people and keeping hands off might be the best thing when you really do not understand the sport.

No amount of money will make you into Vince Lombardi.

Millionaires battle billionaires, and fans are getting ruder and more like a North American answer to hooligans.

And yet we still love these games and most of these players, because we do need them.  We love the sport, we mildly laugh at the guys like TO when they sign a football middle of the game, or do the Dirty Bird or wear Superman capes.

They are our guys.  And as negative as one gets about the cynical nature of sports, there is no getting around our love.

Because at the end of the day, these players can frustrate us and anger us, but when they win, they bring us with them.  We are along for the ride, and that makes it special.
