Sean Deveney's Mock NBA Draft Gets a Grade of "F"
Sean Deveney recently made up a mock NBA draft, predicting the results that will be coming up in June.
Unfortunately, it's only good for a laugh and that's about it. He failed miserably in his assessments of team needs and why each should be drafting a specific player.
He did get the first pick right, though, with Blake Griffin. Here's the link.
Here's Deveney's predicted lottery picks:
1. Sacramento: Blake Griffin, PF
2. Washington: Hasheem Thabeet, C
3. Los Angeles Clippers: Ricky Rubio, PG
4. Oklahoma City: Jordan Hill PF/C
5. Memphis: Greg Monroe, PF
6. Minnesota: Al-Farouq Aminu, SF
7. Golden State: Brandon Jennings, PG
8. Toronto: James Harden, SG
9. New York: Jeff Teague, PG/SG
10. Indiana: Jrue Holiday, PG/SG
11. Charlotte: Stephen Curry, PG/SG
12. New Jersey: Earl Clark, SF
13. Chicago: Chase Budinger, SG
14. Phoenix: Willie Warren, PG
Let's take a look at some of the players Sean likes so much.
Hasheem Thabeet
First of all, there's no way Hasheem Thabeet will be the No. 2 pick in the draft.
For one, Thabeet does not have the strength, the footwork, or the athleticism to play in the NBA for a long time.
He's a project and doesn't deserve to be paid the kind of contract that comes with being taken that high. Maybe he goes as a second-rounder or an undrafted free agent, but as the No. 2?
Please, Deveney—lay off the crack.
If he can't defend the 6'7", 265-pound DeJuan Blair, who went for 22 points and 23 rebounds against Connecticutt, he is not going to make it at all in the NBA, especially against the more athletic and stronger centers.
Basically, Thabeet isn't going to amount to much. The only kind of teams Thabeet has been dominainting are teams that don't even come close to having the talent level of Connecticut.
So, Deveney, this prediction is a joke, even if the Wizards trade the pick. If they keep it, it's totally impossible. They'd be better off with Rubio.
Ricky Rubio
Speaking of Ricky, Deveney makes the Spaniard the third pick.
Hmm...Sean, do you see a problem with this picture? Baron Davis has four years left on the contract he signed, and Rubio is more than likely going to be drafted by the Wizards at two, as they need a point guard.
Jordan Hill
Hill fourth overall? That's a questionable call. Is Hill really worthy of such an investment?
The answer is no. He's a decent player, but he didn't start playing basketball until he was a high school sophomore and still has a lot to work on. He's a second-rounder, not in the top five.
Brandon Jennings
Next, we have Brandon Jennings to the Warriors. This is a complete and utter gaffe.
The Warriors should not take the immature moron who couldn't even get the grades to play at Arizona. He went overseas to get paid, yet hasn't done much there.
The Warriors would be better off drafting Darren Collison or Jeff Teague than the juvenile and unproven Jennings.
Jrue Holliday
Jrue Holliday is not leaving college for the NBA; there's no way he is. He's done squat for UCLA this year. Deveney really needs to think.
He himself stated in his article that Holliday needs to work on every facet of his game. Does that really seem like a wise choice for a team?
No. Who cares if Indiana has two other point guards, providing him time to develop? He's better off at UCLA, where he can actually get minutes.
Chase Budinger
The Bulls taking Chase Budinger! Really, Deveney?
For one, Budinger is highly overrated at Arizona. Yes, he's a good shooter at times, but most of the time when he's being played by athletic defenders he struggles shooting the ball.
Arizona is going to miss the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 25 years because Budinger is their leader.
Budinger's options for playing basketball are either going undrafted and being put in the NBDL or going overseas. There is no way he's a lottery pick.
So, Deveney, next time do a little bit more research before writing such a pathetic attempt of a mock draft.
There are players that are being drafted way too high, some that won't even be coming out of college this year, and some that will never have NBA careers (read: Jennings and Holliday).
Sean includes plenty of other players who just don't have the skills who'll take years to get ready, even though they have used up their eligibility in the NCAA.
