Wrong Umpiring Decisions Haunting India

Vishrut AggarwalMar 7, 2009

India has been unlucky a lot of times due to poor umpiring decisions. Here are five such instances which have haunted my memory till this day.

Sachin Tendulkar was given out against Pakistan by Steve Bucknor in 2004-05. Steve Bucknor raised his finger even when the Pakistanis did not appeal and the ball had clearly missed Tendulkar's bat and sailed into Kamran Akmal's hand. Even though India won the match people felt sorry for Sachin.

M.S Dhoni was given out by Asad Rauf in the D.L.F Cup played between India, Australia and West Indies. India needed to win their match against Australia to meet West Indies in the finals. But unfortunately they were losing their wickets quickly. Dinesh Mongia and M.S.Dhoni were the only batsmen left who were doing their best to help India reach its target. Dhoni was in good form and had already hit a six when Brett Lee bowled a ball to him and he tried to hit the ball for a six but unfortunately Damien Martyn caught the ball just before the boundary line and Asad Rauf raised his finger. But he didn't notice that Brett Lee's foot was a foot ahead of the no ball line.

Harbhajan Singh was given out by Asad Rauf in the D.L.F Cup 2006 played between Australia, India and West Indies. After the fall of M.S.Dhoni's wicket all hopes were on Harbhajan Singh. India needed another 28 runs from 61 balls when Harbhajan came to bat. In the last match Harbhajan had made 35 runs and people expected him to do well. andrew Symonds bowled and Harbhajan tried to play it hesitantly but couldn't nick it. Bradd Haddin caught the ball and there was a loud appeal for caught behind, Asad Rauf raised his finger and later the snickometer showed that the ball had not been nicked. As a result India lost the match.

Rahul Dravid was given out wrongly by Simon Taufal in the first Test of the four match series played at Antigua. Dravid was on 49 and Corey Collymore bowled to him a no ball, Dravid played the ball and Brian Lara at second slip caught it. But Simon Taufal  didn't notice Collymore's foot and raised his finger.

Saurav Ganguly was wrongly given out by Ian Howell against England in the third Test of the three match series played at the Kennington Oval. Paul Collingwood bowled to Saurav Ganguly and the ball hit Ganguly on the pads. There was an appeal for leg before and Howell raised his finger. Later the replays showed that the ball was nicked by the bat.
