Cleveland Browns' Quarterback Non-Controversy: Brady Quinn over Derek Anderson

Erin McLaughlinMar 6, 2009

I hear Eric Mangini has yet to decide on a starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns. I don't get that—Brady Quinn is the guy going forward.

How do you even consider Derek Anderson at this point?

Sure, he looked good—at times—in 2007. And yes, he did play in the Pro Bowl after Tom Brady pulled out. But taking a closer look at Anderson reveals he has little chance of making it to Hawaii again.

Due to an easy Browns' schedule in 2007, most of his success came against bad teams, save for the Pats and Steelers, of which Anderson did not perform well against.  The last few weeks of the season didn't treat Anderson great either.

In fact, he cost his team the playoffs in week 16 by choking against the Bengals, throwing way too many interceptions. Also, don't forget, the only reason he even got the job in the first place was to allow time for Brady to develop.

Fast forward to 2008.

One Monday night game aside, he was a complete disaster. He would eventually be benched, and later had to come in after the benching.

How a player responds after being benched really tells me a lot about that player; Anderson was even worse after the benching than he was before. That right there tells me all I need to know about Anderson.

Now, let's look at Brady Quinn.

He is unproven, but what he has shown so far has been promising. He has had two very solid preseasons, giving him the chance to start three games.

The first two went quite well. The offense produced 30 and 29 points, respectively. Not bad for a guy making a debut.

To be fair, his third start was a little rough.

After his injury, the offense produced zero touchdowns for the rest of the year.

Based on all that, the decision seems quite easy; however, Mangini hasn't decided, which shouldn't come as a total shock.

After all, this is the same guy who benched Chad Pennington in favor of Kellen Clemens.  He had to, on some level, been on board for getting rid of Pennington and bringing in an over-the-hill Brett Favre.  We all know how those decisions worked out.

I find it amazing that some people just don't learn from their mistakes.
